Classic TV Xmas Countdown Episode #50
kgraovac20 December 2023
The Findlays are having a simple Xmas in the wake of Walter's financial crisis. Arthur buys an appliance store as an investment and invites Walter to manage it.

This episode is slightly better than the first two Xmas episodes of MAUDE, although the story could have taken place without the holiday backdrop. It's still nowhere near the series baseline, which was usually way above average for a sitcom.

This is the first appearance of Larry Gelman as podiatrist Hubie Binder who ends up getting in the middle of Walter and Arthur's friendship in future episodes. Gelman had just recently filmed the 1977 cult flick CHATTERBOX about a woman with a talking vagina (DO check it out!).

Cliff Norton plays a drunk who is the victim of Maude's traditional "slam-the-door-in-someone's-face on Xmas Eve" bit.

Only a few minor laughs in this one. Maude makes a lamp out of a Sani-Flush can and later she refers to Walter's new job selling nails as "so butch". 6/10.

A Poor Christmas
Jimmy_the_Gent415 February 2020
Since Walter is bankrupt, Maude suggests only homemade gifts for Christmas.

A funny episode. It begins with Maude and Carol singing "Silent Night" while Maude smashes pottery to make decorations for a gift. Walter arrives saying he got a job selling nails. Then Arthur enters with a doctor colleague Hubie Binder played by Larry Gelman (he often played meek characters in TV sitcoms like "The Odd Couple" and "The Bob Newhart Show"). They tell Walter that he can come in with them in a new appliance store. Walter accepts but Arthur drives him crazy with his bad business ideas. There are some laughs with Maude and a drunk (Cliff Norton) asking for donations. It ends with Arthur giving Walter full ownership of the store.
