- TriviaNanette Fabray has stated in interviews that she was overjoyed to be cast as Mary's mother and hoped this would lead to her and Bill Quinn playing Walt and Dottie Richard's on a recurring basis. However, Fabray was dismayed that after only a couple of appearances their characters never appeared again, and would become offscreen characters for the rest of the series. Fabray felt that perhaps Mary Tyler Moore and she did not develop a good on-screen chemistry and thus the character was dropped. Fabray asked Moore years later as to why her character never continued and was assured by Moore it had nothing to do with her performance although Fabray was never quite sure that was not the reason.

Take it or leave it
This is a so-so episode. Mary's parents appear in Minnesota and move into a house very close to Mary's house in Minneapolis. The Mom is Nanette Fabray,a capable and accomplished actress that does a good job in this episode. Mary's father is Bill Quinn,a veteran actor that is probably most famous for being the bartender on 'the Rifleman' tv series in the late 1950's. These two that portray Mary's parents make a reasonably believable married couple on the show.
The individual actors and actresses do a decent job,it is at least obvious that they are putting some effort into this. The trouble with the show is that the story itself isn't very interesting.
The story is that Mary's parents are watching her like a hawk and cramping her style. That is pretty much the whole gist of the episode, for better or worse. This episode has it's moments,it isn't completely without entertainment value-it is just a bit weak and slow.
See what you think, don't take my word for it.
