- Margaret finds out who her friends really are when Klinger accidentally throws out her wedding ring from Donald with the 4077 trash. Donald is still paying for that ring. It was 14 carat gold with stones set all around it, every 3rd stone a diamond. It had an inscription "Over Hill, Over Dale, Our love will never fail". Margaret is furious with rage and worry. Klinger follows the garbage truck and goes through many garbage dumps to find the ring, but no luck.
Hawkeye and BJ are frustrated when they are trying to perform an arterial transplant, but they do not have a vascular clamp small enough to control an artery without crushing it. The clamps they currently have are designed for large arteries like of the heart, but not for the smaller arteries of the leg. The right sized clamp for the leg arteries does not exist.
"How come the Army can make a gun that will level a village 30 miles away, but they can't come up with a tiny surgical tool that will save a man's leg?" Colonel Potter suggests they talk to the U.S. Army, Corps of Engineers (Those guys could build a sailboat from a pair of skivvies), but they are not available (they need 90 days to rustle up a prototype after they get the specifications. Right now the whole team is busy building a dam on a river in Korea); neither the good doctors (who are mechanically inept and cant even disassemble the original clamp) nor Private Zale can build a clamp that works (The doctors need a clamp with a new handle, and jaws that are more sensitive and a screw that helps them regulate the pressure of the jaws). Zale comes up with a good prototype, only it wont unwind after being clenched and almost gives Hawkeye a purple hand when he tests it on himself. The corps of engineers agree but want 4 nurses to be sent their unit party for the weekend. The nurses at 4077 refuse as Hot Lips is on their ass in her foul mood, without her ring.
So, Hawkeye and BJ find a jack of all trades: a master craftsman who can... A Korean street hawker Mr Shin (Keye Luke) passes through 4077 and has the exact same ring that Margaret lost (he sources it from Tokyo where it is mass produced).. The hawker offers to build the clamp in 3 days for $10. BJ and Hawkeye get the ring inscribed (with a phrase that was on the original ring) (the whole deal cost then $25 and the new ring was delivered to them in 3 days), and ask Klinger to give it back to Margaret. Margaret is over the moon, but finds that the inscription has a spelling mistake ("Over Hill, Over Dale, Our Love will ever fail"). Margaret is apoplectic, but Klinger tells her off saying that BJ and Hawkeye just wanted her to have her ring back and she didn't even appreciate the effort.
The new clamp made by Mr Shin works and saves limbs.
