- When the autoclave (instrument sterilizer) explodes in O.R., Klinger pushes Charles out of the line of fire just in time, but B.J. catches part of the blast and has a serious arm injury. Winchester had been riding Klinger hard for not doing his job properly, just before Klinger pushed him from the line of the blast and saved his life.
BJ tries to hide it (he wont allow Hawkeye to examine his injury and insists that he is fine) but gives it away when he drops a martini glass. Hawkeye and Potter cant find anything wrong with the X ray. But Potter calls for a replacement doctor for emergencies. Dr Norman Taeger (Tim O'Connor) duly arrives, but rubs Hawkeye the wrong way when Potter reveals that Norman is a specialist in soft tissue injury and has been brought in to treat BJ. Hawkeye says he is BJ's doctor and did not appreciate being bypassed.
For saving his life, Charles declares he is fully indebted to Maxwell Klinger and becomes his personal assistant. Klinger's nose is broken, so Winchester agrees to fill in his job as the company clerk. Potter advises against it as he does see Winchester as the typing type. Winchester cant take shorthand, he doesn't know the filing system and can only make coffee in an emergency. But after several days of bowing to Klinger's every command, Charles begins to wish he HAD been killed. Klinger wants tea with honey, when there is no honey in the entire unit. Winchester has to do all the reports: the daily, the weekly, the requisitions and so on. All the meals in bed. Klinger wants bed time stories to be read to him (from adults only novels). Klinger plans to be in recovery for 2-3 weeks and Winchester is dreading it after a single day of servitude.
Meanwhile, Hawkeye doesn't like the doctor called in to help treat B.J.. Norman suggests that Hawkeye and Potter didn't read the X-ray correctly and maybe missed a hairline fracture or something. Norman also insults Hawkeye by calling him an amateur. Norman says he is the world's oldest draftee and had a private practice back home, where he is used to giving the orders. The next morning, casualties hit the 4077th. Norman and Hawkeye clash in surgery when Hawkeye insists on double checking Norman's work. Hawkeye wants to see if Norman got all the shrapnel and he did.
Klinger expects Winchester to do his chores, after completing surgery. BJ helps with sorting out patients before they enter the hospital but then his arm goes ashen and numb. Hawkeye diagnoses a compartment hemorrhage (pulse is diminished and poor circulation in the hand.. He cant even lift his middle finger). Norman suggests that the arm be operated upon pronto or BJ will lose use of it. Hawkeye assigns Norman to do the operation.
BJ's arm survives. Hawkeye thanks Norman. When Winchester doesn't show up, Klinger calls for him on the PA. Winchester gets out of his obligation to Klinger when he finally tells him to shove it.
