- B.J. writes a letter home to his wife, and Father Mulcahy gets a visit from one of his rigid superiors.
- BJ writes home for the 3d time this week; Davis, a patient Frank gave up for dead, now has BJ to thank for his life. One of Father Mulcahy's superiors, Col. Maurice Holister, Divisional Chaplain, is coming to inspect him. The Swamp Rats enjoy Peg's first overseas package. BJ tells her how Hawkeye keeps the 4077 crew from going nuts. Hawkeye read in Life how Caltech students squeezed 15 people into a VW bug, so he organizes a similar foray inside a jeep, trying to beat the record. Even Hotlips participates in the merriment...but when Col. Holister drives up, he finds Father Mulcahy at the bottom of the pile. Col. Holister wants to turn mild-mannered Francis into Elmer Gantry. Potter wants to train Koreans to work in the wards; Frank is first to teach them some English. Later, Hawkeye gets to teach the VIP verbage. Holister forces Father, against his own better judgment, to write a letter to the family of an unstable patient. Luckily the young soldier pulls through and Fr. learns a lesson. The Korean students get Frank right where he lives.—LA-Lawyer
- Things are once again slow at the 4077th MASH. Hawkeye is bored out of his skull, as usual. BJ writes home for the 3d time this week; Davis, a patient Frank gave up for dead, now has BJ to thank for his life. BJ was the anesthesiologist while Frank was operating. The patient's BP and pulse are dropping and soon the patient has no pulse. Frank gives up. BJ takes over and gives the soldier a chest massage to revive him. The patient gets a pulse and his life is saved. One of Father Mulcahy's (william Christopher) superiors, Col. Maurice Holister (Ned Beatty), Divisional Chaplain, is coming to inspect him. Holister is considered to be tough and thorough. Mulcahy is all jumpy (irons his cassock and even his underwear), as Maurice is known as the "Atilla the Hun" of Chaplains.
Frank, as usual, finds the merriment disgusting and totally unauthorized. Frank complains to Potter, who recognizes that Hawkeye is simply trying to maintain morale in the unit. Even Hotlips participates in the merriment as Hawkeye convinces her to get in for Life Magazine...but when Col. Holister drives up, he finds Father Mulcahy at the bottom of the pile. Holister wanted to know if Mulcahy approved of the activity and was disappointed to see him alight from the jeep. Col. Holister wants to turn mild-mannered Francis into Elmer Gantry. Holister says Mulcahy's services lack excitement.. He needs to grab these people by his hands. He wants Mulcahy to use his voice to guide the personnel, enlisted and officers, into blessedness. Lead the attack with bible in one hand and sword in another.
Potter catches Knlinger trying to run away in a stolen jeep, dressed as a Korean. Potter explains that nobody wants to be in Korea, but they all have to do their best under the circumstances. He refuses to give him the discharge. He then tries to escape with an inflatable dinghy.. Next camouflaged with bushes, but was caught when a dog peed on him Potter wants to train Koreans to work in the wards; Frank is first to teach them some English (Better dead than red, don't contaminate our drinking water with fluoride and so on). Later, Hawkeye gets to teach the VIP verbiage (Frank Burns eats worms and such)
Holister forces Father, against his own better judgment, to write a letter to the family of an unstable patient. Mulcahy says that his policy has been to let patients get stable first. The patient is Davis, who BJ saved in the operating room. Hollister forces Mulcahy to write the letter despite Mulcahy explaining that sometimes patients do die even after showing some signs of recovery. But Holister is intent on Mulcahy writing a strong, affirmative letter to Davis's family. But Davis's condition gets worse and Hawkeye finds a hole which was bleeding internally in his x-ray. the doubt is on Frank since he operated on Davis first. Hawkeye saves Davis and he is shipped stateside.
The Korean students (for the ward duty training) get Frank right where he lives. They say "go get em', Ferret Face", when Frank calls BJ and Hawkeye Twerps
