'Ballinger' Ahead Of His Time, Detective-Wise
This was an above-average episode, start to finish, which means it was very good since most of these shows are good to begin with.
A crook spends 10 years in Joliet, finally gets out and hitches a ride to Chicago. En route, he finds out the nice guy giving him the ride is a teacher and the place he's going, they don't know him. So our friend blackjacks him a few times, dumps the body, drives to Chicago and assumes his identity. Heck, he'd been a teacher before so he could fake it, even at this prestigious prep school. Meanwhile, it's apparent he's back doing what he likes best: robbing banks.
That's how "Det. Lt. Frank Ballinger" (Lee Marvin) gets involved. Who's robbing these small banks around the Chicago area? It really gets intense when the crook, "Russ Mortell" is recognized in his third holdup and winds up in the middle of more than a robbery.
Kudos to Ballinger in this episode, a man ahead of his time in using little things for means of detection, something his boss seems clueless about. Man, you hope police captains aren't as inept as Frank's boss, "Capt. Grey" (Paul Newlan) who makes fun of every idea Ballinger has even though they are all right on the money!
