Being asthmatic most of my entire life, I tend to take noticed about a few things when I see a person struggling for breath. There were a couple of occasions where I witnessed individuals collapsing right in front of me. One time an overweight male was struggling down the steps to the subway. To keep up with the flow of human traffic then the traveler grabbed his arm as an oncoming train approached the station. He started to gasp for air and then collapsed on the hard concrete station platform . His body started to turn blue. Two kindly strangers surrounded him to proceed in CPR to try to revive the man. Another instance happened on opening day of the baseball season in 1996. The Cincinnati Reds hosted the Montreal Expos. During the pre-game home plate meeting 300 lb umpire John McSherry labored out of the dugout toward home plate huffing and puffing. The opposing mangers were read the pre-game ground rules as the portly McSherry paused between sentences taking large gasps of air. In hind sight the participants figured it was just bronchitis or a common spring cold. The game started and only seven pitches later McSherry called time and walked toward the Expos dugout and collapsed face first into the artificial turf. McSherry never regain conciseness. He died of cardiac arrest. I watched this episode of the Lucy Desi Comedy hour the same way. There was a story here about conflict. Should Lucy be a stay at home Mom or enter a career as a morning TV personality? Lucy lands the audition. Lucy ends up working the TV morning show with the veteran actor Paul Douglas as the morning co-host/weather girl. Paul Douglas's work was primarily in motion pictures yet he did get his start in Radio doing basically sports interviews. As for the husband Ricky, (Desi Arnaz), he was criticized for changing the format of the half hour I love Lucy show to a one hour comedy using celebrities guests as the main focus in the story. Lucy's physical attributes take over as usual, primarily for laughs only as she botches everything to the displeasure of her host.. Paul couldn't wait to fire her, even before the first show concluded. The Sponsors on the other hand loved the spontaneity and energy Lucy provided and they wanted more. Lucy's schedule was just too much combined with a child to raise and early morning drudgery. Lucy overdoses on sleeping pills and Douglas and Ricky have to get her to the studio on time. Here you see the struggling Douglas huffing and gasping for air trying to move Lucy. Douglas in reality was diagnosed with Heart arrhythmia at that time coupled with early emphysema due to smoking cigarettes. I was upset seeing Douglass gasping during that scene. Douglas proceeded onward to other projects but cast members saw how he was struggling physically during the filming. Douglas did died suddenly a few months later of Cardiac arrest. Guest celebrities included Doris Packer and Joi Lansing always a personal favorite. Other moments, unrelated as Actor Carol Burnett recalls while guest starring on a Jack Benny Program. They did a Jane and Tarzan sketch. Benny slipped and fell on fake palms and cut himself. Visibly wincing, injured yet he continued the scene as a professional would. Here Douglas finished the show out of breathe and exhausted.
