- Dr. Elizabeth Rodgers: Your cop at the scene wasn't that far off. Based on core temperature and rigor, I estimate time of death to be around midnight.
- Lennie Briscoe: I don't suppose you got a couple of small caliber slugs floating around in there?
- Dr. Elizabeth Rodgers: [handing him an evidence baggie] Pair of .380s. Hallmark execution. First shot was close contact. Second, inches away. Both seared his scalp.
- Ed Green: Damn, he was right about that, too.
- Lennie Briscoe: Now we'll never hear the end of it.
- Ed Green: Double tap, point blank to the back of the head.
- Lennie Briscoe: .380, nothing at the scene. Shooter must have picked up his brass.
- Ed Green: This victim's a mobbed-up ex-con.
- Lennie Briscoe: This was a hit.
- Ed Green: Has all the earmarks.
- Dr. Elizabeth Rodgers: Yeah. Speaking of marks, see that one? On his neck behind the right ear?
- Lennie Briscoe: Crescent moon. Looks like a burn.
- Dr. Elizabeth Rodgers: It's a brand.
- Ed Green: Somebody branded him, like with a hot piece of metal?
- Dr. Elizabeth Rodgers: Mm-hmm. Postmortem.
- Ed Green: If he is a pro, maybe that's how he signs his work. Like a calling card or something.
- Lennie Briscoe: Have gun, will travel.
- Lennie Briscoe: We're checking open homicides to see if this crescent moon thing crops up.
- Anita Van Buren: His daughter's got a point. Who'd hire a hit for a part time carriage driver?
- Ed Green: Hey, Ident section faxed over Tortino's rap sheet.
- Lennie Briscoe: Yeah, his boss said he'd been away.
- Ed Green: He didn't tell us he did two of a possible ten at Ossining.
- Anita Van Buren: For bookmaking?
- Ed Green: Huh. Burglarly, grand larceny one, possession of stolen goods, assault.
- Lennie Briscoe: It's important to diversify.
- Peter Righetti: Ah, another tough day at the office, huh?
- Peter Righetti: We're on an espresso break. And who are you? O.C. task force?
- Lennie Briscoe: Homicide.
- Peter Righetti: Homicide? You're in the wrong place, Homicide. Steps around the corner are Rizzoni's funeral home.
- Lennie Briscoe: [to Ed] Ah, this is why they call them "wiseguys".
- Lennie Briscoe: So, this broker...
- Ed Green: Cary Stillman.
- Lennie Briscoe: Just happens to know Tortino and the guy who had him whacked? Small world.
- Ed Green: Hey, man, that may mean nothing.
- Lennie Briscoe: Or it does and we just don't know what yet.
- Arthur Branch: I'd advise you not to forget whose name's on the door.
- Jack McCoy: How could you do that to me, Arthur? Sandbag me like that in front of the U.S. Attorney's office? How am I supposed to deal with them now?
- Arthur Branch: I apologize for springin' that on you, but this is not about you saving face or looking bad in front of an Assistant United States Attorney.
- Jack McCoy: This is nonsense, Arthur. They don't need Righetti! What the hell's going on here?
- Arthur Branch: Exactly what you were told in there - nothing more, nothing less.
- Jack McCoy: I don't believe that! Push comes to shove, the feds corner Righetti, they'll cut deal with him! He'll give up his nephew and his crew, and they'll send the old man to Tuscon to play shuffleboard in the sun, and you won't be able to do a damn thing about it!
- Arthur Branch: Sometimes we make deals that leave a bad taste in everyone's mouth. You've done it yourself a million times, Jack! You spit it out and move on!
- Arthur Branch: Now, you're letting your friendship with Jean Piccone cloud your judgment.
- Arthur Branch: And what I want you to do - what I need you to do - is withdraw that plea agreement and let Righetti go.
- Jack McCoy: You think they knew? The Feds? That Peter Righetti was going to have his uncle killed?
- Arthur Branch: They might've predicted... that's a long way from knowing.
- Jack McCoy: What if they used us to put Righetti back on the street?
- Arthur Branch: I think you're giving the Feds way too much credit. They ain't that clever.
- Jack McCoy: Still, lucky break for them. Now they roll up the whole crew, starting with Peter Righetti for the murder of his uncle...
- Arthur Branch: Good riddance.
