- Quotes
[first lines]
Capt. Steve Burton: [into radio microphone] Come in, London. Do you read me?
[static]
Capt. Steve Burton: This is Flight Six-Twelve to London Control A. We've hit a solar turbulence area and it's jamming your radio band. Can you switch to an alternate range? Over.
[more static - slams down microphone]
Capt. Steve Burton: Nothing.
- Alternate versionsThe original version of the pilot that was filmed features the same opening sequence as the show as aired, but has a different theme. Musical cues from 'Lost in Space' are used throughout. The original pilot shows the seven castaways displaying the various personality traits they would exhibit during the series. The scene where Fitzhugh overhears Steve and Dan discussing how the police are waiting for him is deleted, and Fitzhugh' and Barry's encounter with a giant lizard is also deleted. Steve fending off a giant spider while he searches for Fitzhugh and Barry, before Valerie finds him, doesn't appear. The scenes with Dan using the retro rockets to scare off the cat aren't used, so the cat's attack just... stops. There is an alternate ending to the episode where Fitzhugh finds the money he lost earlier and a giant dog doesn't appear. Me-TV airs this version of the pilot as part of their "SyFy Saturdays" rather than the version that aired when the show went into syndication.
- ConnectionsFeatured in Land of the Giants: Wild Journey (1970)
Irwin Allen after dropped with The Time Tunnel already had in mind an upcoming series Land of the Giants possibly based in Gulliver's travel, thus he has tailored on Sci-Fi concept as he used to do on previous successful series, at first sight Irwin wants the Earthlings in horrifying giant planet as the pilot suggest, all Spindrift's crew and passengers in jeopardy in menacing giant environment, in The Crash which the own Irwin directed he exposes several animals that freak out the little ones as Lizard, Spider and Cat, that aftermaths who knows why are slowing disappearing without any fair reason, that is the early premise as Irwin had planned.
In this first episode on June 12Th 1983 a sub-orbital fight by a small spacecraft Spindrift takes off from Los Angeles toward London suddenly enters in a heavy stormy ends up caught by a powerful electromagnetic field by a kind of green color time warp that sending them into another dimension or something like that, the expert pilot Steve Burton (Gary Conway) and his co-pilot Dan Erickson (Don Marshal) trying by any means control the smallest spacecraft without success aided by the frightened stewardess Betty Hamilton (Heather Young).
Among the four passengers are the Tycoon Mark Wilson (Don Matheson who will travel to London to close a profitable deal of 50.000 million dollars, the single jetsetter Valerie Scott (Deanna Lund) travelling for touristic purpose, the orphan boy Barry Lockridge (Stefan Arngrin) has travelling to England due his father a former Navy's mariner died and he'll lives with his Auntie there and lastly the bleak Alexander B. Fitzhugh (Kurt Kasznar) a self-called Navy official in a secret task on England having a cross-body suitcase containing one million dollars, such money coming from unknow source.
There the radio is off-line due they are in a giant world, thus the frequency clearly is another, a landing is required and they do it in a track, the Spindrift's crew leave the spacecraft to check out what's going on out there, when a giant car passing thru upon Capt. Burton and Erickson, they right away go back to ship in order to take off at once, when appears a giant boy that hold the small Spindrift where the Captain Burton pushes all forces that the ship can afford, at last free they catch a glimpse on outside where tallest building all around and the ship wasn't standing such thrust due the power cells is weaking process, so Captain Burton decides landing wherever there, ending up in a dark forest, no damage at first sight however the upon a strong fog the crew demand a waiting for the angry passengers.
Thus Captain Burton goes outside to take a look around, meanwhile at cockpit Dan warning him about something big is near, Valerie sneakily leaves the ship without notice, Burton faces a giant spider and aftermaths meets with Valerie harshly rebuked by Burton, too late to go back, then both will entering and exploring in deeply giant jungle, suddenly they find a cage, Burton warns Valerie doesn't enter there, the stubborn girl going inside anyhow, followed by the angry Captain, when the cage catches both inside, meanwhile at Spindrift Fitzhugh also stealthily goes out awestruck by such gigantic size environment, track down by Barry, both walking thru the giant world, a lizard comes, and finally a giant cat gonna kick the Fitzhugh's suitcase spreading all money on the ground.
Back on Spindrift Fitzhugh and Barry are received vociferously by co-pilot Dan, in the meantime the Cat reaches the ship scratching it and trying catch a good meal, anyway now the cat goes away and Burton and Valerie are pick up by a giant scientist that taking him without perceiving the Earthlings inside the cage, at Spindrift a small disagreement takes place with nrevous Fitzhugh with a gun demanding Erickson takes off and Mark Wilson fix the power cells, the brave co-pilot decides looking Captain Burton and Valerie instead accepts order of Fitzhugh.
This is an overlong review, sorry for that, nonetheless as a pilot is an opening episode I'll put my thoughts about this special concept series, where in the ending at waste field the Captain Burton strongly implied with all them, but more specifically with the complainer Fitzhugh that hereinafter this is what will be, giving a hint to audience all about to come next, in that sequence in advance Irwin displays many props that will appears on upcoming episodes as the blue thermal bottle, Tin Can, cell, medicine box, light bulb and so for, fine episode apart the name, Irwin and the writer Anthony Wilson should pick up a better one to a pilot, the Crash is very vague and shallow in my judgment.
Thanks for reading.
