NLF stands for National Liberation Front, a title adopted by a number of groups seeking to overthrow the government of a country, in this instance it is specifically referring to the National Liberation Front for South Vietnam (NLFSV). The NLFSV is the name of the Viet Cong as an organization, they were an armed communist revolutionary group in South Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia who were working with the military of North Vietnam, and were backed by their government as well as China and the Soviet Union. The Viet Cong were villagers, farmers and fisherman who were secretly part of the North Vietnamese military who carried out guerrilla style attacks against South Vietnam and the United States military with the goal of annexing South Vietnam and eventually Laos and Cambodia and forcing them to join the North. While they were unsuccessful in conquering Laos and Cambodia they were victorious against South Vietnam and the United States due to their unconventional tactics and being well equipped and trained thanks to support from China. Their victory resulted in the end of the Vietnam war, the withdrawal of U.S. military forces from the country and the annexing of South Vietnam by the North and the creation of a new unified communist nation called the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
