Penn Talks His Career
Inside the Actors Studio: Sean Penn (1999)
*** 1/2 (out of 4)
Fun interview with actor Sean Penn goes over projects such as TAPS, FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH, AT CLOSE RANGE, WE'RE NO ANGELS, CASULTIES OF WAR, STATE OF GRACE, THE Indian RUNNER, CARLITO'S WAY and DEAD MAN WALKING among others. Fans of Penn will know that he's usually pretty hit and miss when it comes to his interviews because he can often not want to talk about certain things or wants to discuss stuff other than the actual movies that he's made. I found this to be one of the better interviews I've seen with him as he starts off talking about his connection to the Actors Studio and then accepts an honor that they're paying to his father who had died a short time earlier. From here Penn talks about his influence on certain films as well as why he wanted to direct. Overall this is a pretty good interview and the majority of the film's you'd want them to cover are discussed. Penn shares what he learned from Robert DeNiro on WE'RE NO ANGELS and he tells a funny story about a prank he did to Christopher Walken on AT CLOSE RANGE. Penn talks about why he broke his "directing only" rule and coming back with home runs in CARLITO'S WAY and DEAD MAN WALKING. Fans of Penn will certainly want to check out this episode as it's one of the rare times they can see the actor talking about his profession and without a political way.
