John Doe: Part II
AaronCapenBanner19 November 2014
David Banner(Bill Bixby) is still out in the wilderness with Jack McGee(Jack Colvin) his head heavily bandaged so that he can't be recognized as David Banner. A forest fire and a wolf pack are approaching their camp, and David splints Jack's broken leg and builds a makeshift litter to carry him to safety, as his memory comes back to him, and the seriousness of the situation fully dawns on him, though he must save McGee's life as he opens up about why he follows the Hulk. Action-packed finale of this story changes the narrative focus as McGee now knows it is a man who turns into the Hulk, still not knowing it is David. Fine acting by the two stars in memorable two-part episode.

Solid Hulk episodes
ODDBear24 August 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Amnesiac Banner (with facial bandages) gets stuck with relentless reporter Jack McGee in a forest after a plain carrying the two crashes.

One of the more celebrated Hulk episodes is good in every way. What's most appealing here is that we get a glimpse into what drives McGee so hard in trying to track down the Hulk.

As usual Bixby is good but Colvin completely owns the show as the dogged reporter. Revealing a more human side to his character, Colvin excels in this two-parter. It just makes it even more sad that the show didn't have a proper conclusion and McGee never found out who the Hulk was.

Warning: Spoilers
This is more like it. There's still a fair amount of flashbacks going on here, plus a lot of inconsequential scenes with some guys talking about how to deal with the forest fire which threatens Banner and McGee, so even when combined with part 1 this doesn't feel like a full episode's worth. But what's there is pretty exceptional.

With David and Jack fleeing a forest fire, David finally becomes the Hulk again. Naturally, his time as the Hulk happens while Jack is unconscious, and David recovers with his memory none the better. As you'd expect, his memory returns by the time he hits transformation #2. The moment of remembering is played, surprisingly enough, as a moment of joy at rediscovering oneself.

David takes the opportunity to try to talk Jack out of his pursuit of the Hulk, pointing out that because the Hulk saved his life back in "The Hulk Breaks Las Vegas" (three cheers for that episode finally getting acknowledgment), Jack owes him. Jack responds with a speech about how ethics and morality are meaningless, but David, being David, saves his life anyway.

Back in "Stop the Presses", Jack told his co-worker "I have friends." Even then, it rang false, and you had to figure that Jack thinks the security guard expressing concern for his health qualifies as friendship. The same principle applies here: Jack calls David a friend, but they are not friends. David acts as a friend to Jack, but Jack certainly does not act as a friend to him. But Jack is not without a conscience; that's been shown time and again. Even if he never overtly shows it, it's clear from this episode that deep down, Jack McGee despises himself. It is this tragic character portrait which makes this ep so compelling.
