- TriviaInteresting contraposition of facts in this presentation...Sparta, Miss. is supposedly a backwater Southern town - but this retired locksmith recognized a Schlage Everest key bow on the killer's room key - a brand-new, medium-security locking system which hardly was likely to be found used by any 50-year-old motel in the Deep South at the time. Also, it's an anachronism...Schlage had just released its high-security Primus locking system when this show was aired; the Everest medium-security system (meant to fill a marketing gap between basic Schlage locks and the premier Primus system) wasn't marketed until the late 1990s.
- GoofsAfter hitting Carl Purdy over the head and depositing him on the sofa, Roy Paxton reaches out the door and picks up Purdy's shotgun. When viewed from the exterior camera, he only has the shotgun in his hand. When they switch to a camera inside the room, Paxton suddenly has both the shotgun and a baseball bat in his hand.
- Quotes
[the whole family is unloading a crypt filled with hot water bottles containing a total of $750,000. Meanwhile, Gillespie and his team have assembled in the mausoleum doorway]
Chief William O. 'Bill' Gillespie: I reckon that's $25-30,000 a bag.
Vidalia Purdy: [smugly] That's right.
[Vidalia realizes she's answered Chief Gillespie]

Hubby's back in town
This In The Heat Of The Night episode has Robert Donner newly released and on
parole from Texas breaking parole by coming to Sparta, Mississippi to see his ex-wife Robby Perdy. Donner doesn't believe in divorce, but that's beside the point.
What he wants is the loot from a big robbery he pulled off over a decade ago But Perdy spent a lot of that money on a stable for their horse loving son Terry Hobbs and more on her new husband Charlie Hunter's hardware business.
This episode has a bit mre humor of the black variety than most. Especially from both Perdy who's a sly one and from Hobbs who's a nice kid but a bit on the thick side.
