A Poor Start
justinboggan6 December 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Fans have been waiting since 1990 for some proper Hunter and McCall action in a episodic manner, and the wait was, unfortunately, not worth it.

The seven seasons of the original series had pretty much, except for a handful of episodes, played it down the middle politically and in the rare instances it didn't and was Left, it was light and not such a big deal, but right off the bat the revival series starts as a Leftist's wet dream: a boat of illegal alien Mexican's is gunned down and INS agent is somehow part of it.

We get some spiel from McCall about illegal aliens and INS agents enforcing the law (suddenly now she's a leftist), and a mediocre guilt trip about the surviving illegal alien woman. Add to this poor acting by the new supporting cast, a bland modern music score (gone are the days of Post & Carpenter, and even Murphy), and poor writing.

The script is by-the-numbers and there is a serious lack of realism. Fans of the original series know the duo checked in with their desk Sargent, made proper calls to dispatch, and had semi proper crime scene investigations. Now they barely check is, and procedure is basically thinking a guy is guilty and going after him. None of the more complex plots of the older series, where you thought it was one guy, then it wasn't, then you thought it was another, then it wasn't, then it turned out to be somebody you didn't suspect, are present here.

The chemistry between Hunter and McCall is barely there, as it's lost in the poor script and supporting cast the of the more flash than substance substandard episode.

If you you like Hunter and McCall, the glory days are and will forever remain, the original six seasons of the series that started it all (before McCall left and wasn't in the final season). No wonder this revival got canceled. If the fan base had all found out what they did to their beloved characters, they'd have stopped watching. This isn't worth your time.
