While riding his motorbike up in the mountains, Michael meet the girl Isolde, an eccentric and colourful bird of paradise who is a keen painter and, at present, stony broke and hungry. He brings her home to the hotel, where he puts her up and feeds her. Isolde makes a bit of money doing portraits of the hotel guests, but can't produce anything like the artful paintings she had shown Michael at the time of their first meeting. She explains that she can only produce good art when she is unhappy. Wealty patron of the arts Lionel Horck shows an interest in sponsoring Isolde when he sees the works from what she describes as her unhappy period. Meanwhile Ewald Stronck is starting to blackmail Renate Feller with his knowledge that her husband is still alive.
