Bachelor Week on Tool Time kicks off with Tim demonstrating the WRONG way to iron a shirt. Despite Al's warning about using too much starch, Tim goes at it anyway and ends up with a shirt perfect for hitchhiking. At home, Brad discovers something terrible that will bring his whole world crashing down around him: he's got a pimple. Now what's he gonna do? He's got a big date tomorrow night. Tim suggests using a hot compress, followed by a good popping'. Problem solved. Well, one problem has been solved, as another one was about to present itself: Jill feels sorry for her professor, Judith, who has to go home to an empty house. And so, she decides once again to play matchmaker, and which "lucky" bachelor does Jill intend to set Judith up with? I'll give you a hint: he lives next door, wears a floppy hat and says "hidey ho, neighbor." Feeling very protective of Wilson, Tim tries to shy Jill off of the idea. He doesn't trust a woman who drives a station wagon. Regardless, Jill decides to push her luck, and so she invites Wilson over for dinner the following night. She mentions wanting to pair him up with her professor, and even though he's reluctant at first, Wilson agrees to the dinner date, provided they have it at his house instead, as there are more things to hide his face. So, Jill tells him how to dress, and it's a date. Watch out, Wilson.
There's some news on the status of Brad's pimple: it's a full-blown zit. Tim's compress idea didn't work. Now all the kids will now be calling him Rudolph. In fact, Randy does, and right to his face. Since Jill is on a roll with trying to solve other people's problems, she moves in to fix Brad's as well... with make-up. So while Brad decides whether or not his big date is important enough to dabble into his mother'd cosmetics, Tim and Jill head over to Casa de Wilson for that matchmaker dinner. Judith seemed like a nice woman, worldly and outgoing. And when she meets Wilson, we finally learn his last name: Wilson. The two of them hit it off almost instantly when Wilson admits he's read Judith's book on the mating of insects (the writers must have loved that book's title because in Season 6 "The Karate Kid Returns", Wilson claims to have written that same book). In the weeks that passed, Wilson Wilson was on top of the world with Judith, but according to Jill, the feeling isn't mutual. It seems her beau is having a little trouble being intimate...as in sharing feelings. Despite making this mess, Jill sends Tim over to clean it up. So he heads over to Wilson's, and the two get to talking about feelings. He advises him to open up, not intellectualize everything and use the words "I feel" more often. And so, when Wilson and Judith have their next dinner date, this time just the two of them, the topic of emotions is brought up. Wilson talks about his father and how emotionally unavailable he was. Judith assures him he's nothing like his old man and points out just how considerate he is of other people's feelings, namely her's. And so, Wilson lays on some romantic talk and he and Judith give one another the ol' saliva swap. Glad things worked out for Wilson, but what about Brad? Turns out she really digs a guy who wears make-up, and so Brad passes on his technique to other boys who need help hiding zits to impress the ladies.
We see Judith one more time in the series, after that she's mentioned here and there, and then never seen again. Not sure what happened, but I guess either her and Wilson's romance wasn't interesting enough to carry any more subplots...especially when the man has to continually hide his face. I will give Home Improvement credit where it's due as they never got too cheap with the face-hiding gag, like they never had him hold his hand over his mouth, or pull the neck of his shirt up over his nose, they just always had him standing behind something or wearing some kind of face mask. So if you like Wilson, I recommend Wilson's Girlfriend, see how he wines and dines a lady, and especially for Brad wearing make- up. I also recommend the rest of Season 4, which is, I think, Home Improvement's last really solid season. Sure, Seasons 5-8 are pretty good in their own right, but they do have their share of flawed, ridiculous and insipid episodes. I think my favorite Season 4 episodes are A Marked Man, The Naked Truth, A House Divided, It's My Party, The Route of All Evil, Some Like it Hot Rod, Brother, Can You Spare a Hot Rod, Twas the Night Before Chaos, No, No, Godot and Bachelor of the Year. My least favorites are Talk to Me, Tool Time After Dark, He Ain't Heavy, He's Just Irresponsible, and Super Bowl Fever. If you're collecting Home Improvement on DVD, Season 4 is a must. So, what awaits us in Season 5? There's a new boss at Binford, Jill ruins marriages, Tim gets a PhD, Brad gets a haircut, and Tim gets fixed.
