Today's show begins with Jill organizing a "no dinner dinner party" as a fund-raiser for the library. This means she expects people to donate money to a dinner party that won't happen and the library can keep all the money they raise. Sounds stupid, right? Well, it WAS Jill's idea. Anyway, on to Tool Time where Tim and Al introduce the Man's Kitchen. You remember the Man's Bathroom? Well, how here's a kitchen. It's powered by a car ignition system, which Tim manages to start on his third attempt, then the doors slide open to reveal the kitchen of every man's dream. Paper plates that look like tires, a steady supply of beans and potatoes. Tim selects potatoes because he had his beans yesterday. He heats them in the Binford Macrowave, which nukes those spuds in seconds. Fortunately Al and Tim have lead vests. Now for some meat. Fortunately, the Man's Kitchen comes equipped with its own butcher: Benny Baroni, back when he used to have a job. Tim orders a thick porterhouse, while Al has a petite fillet mignon...now syndication cuts that last part out, so when they sit down to eat, we're left with thinking Tim intentionally gave Al the smaller steak to be a jerk. So they nuke the steaks, Tim drowns Al's in salt, then he throws them away. Finally, to clean up all that mess, they activate the self-cleaning mechanism... unfortunately, they forgot to notify the butcher.
So while Jill continues to push her stupid no-dinner dinner, Tim tries to think of a way to top the Man's Kitchen for Tool Time's big fifth anniversary. Jill suggests a crummy-ass clip show, but Tim knows better. He wants to take the gang to Indy. However, things are not well with Binford president Wes Davidson. It seems the kitchen went over-budget, so from hereon out, Davidson has to approve of EVERY cent Tim spends, which means NO to Indie. Tim tries to tell Jill of his plight, but she's focused on her fund-raiser. Thankfully, there's always Wilson. In a nutshell, he tells Tim quality over quantity is what it's important. So, on to the fifth anniversary show. Tool Time: Five Years of Fail. Jill, Brad, Randy, Mark and Wilson are in the audience. Anyway, what does Tim have in store for his audience on this special occasion? A crummy-ass clip show...or rather, the very first episode of Tool Time from 1989. Back when Mrs. Binford was the tool girl, Tim had a beard, and shockingly, Al did not. This was also back when Al thought Tim knew what he was doing, and of course Tim stops the video before we predictably see Al get hurt (see Tool Time After Dark: Part 2 to hear what happens next). But the show's not over yet. As a special treat, Al and Jill managed to bring a piece of Indy to Tim: Michael Andretti and Johnny Rutherford! Apparently they bought Jill's no-dinner dinner schtick...you know, that gag wasn't funny the first time. So, after a little sit down with Rutherford and Andretti, Tim gathers everyone on stage, cast, crew, even camera operators...probably not a good idea.
And so concludes Tool Time's fifth anniversary. Ironically, it would only be around for five more years. I think we can all agree that the Man's Kitchen is something we all want. The Man's Bedroom comes around in Season 5, after that is a Man's Gym and a Man's Dormroom. They should create a Man's Mansion with all these rooms. When it all comes down to it, Tool Time isn't that great of a show, but it seems to mean so much to Tim, as well as Al, so that's why they keep doing it. Plus, it brings some comedic relief to the plot of Home Improvement. But of course, things do lose comedic value after time passes, so in the later seasons, Tool Time becomes just a joke in and of itself. So anyway, see the Man's Kitchen and see Tool Time celebrate a semi-successful five years.
