- Manolito Montoya: Mr. Cannon, the land they were forced to sell, the house Mrs. Leyton lost... it was the High Chaparral.
- Victoria Cannon: It's wrong to hate like that! It's wrong!
- Fay Leyton: Don't you judge me! It's not your right. It's not anybody's right. How do you know what these fifteen years have been like for me? You think I just want revenge for my husband's death? No, my dear lady, it's much more than that. It's for the home that I never had. It's for the babies that I never had. It's for... it's for all of these fifteen empty years! You tell me not to hate. Hate is all that kept me going! It's all that's kept me alive! It's helped me survive and build what I got now! And my hate is strong enough to see that a Montoya never lives in a house that they took away from me. And it's strong enough to stop you, Victoria Montoya, from ever having babies in the bedroom where I once dreamed of having babies. We have nothing more to say to each other.
- Buck Cannon: You gonna do ranch work?
- Tracy Conlin: I don't know. She hasn't told me yet.
- Buck Cannon: She?
- Tracy Conlin: Miss Leyton. She told me the hours were short and the pay was good.
- Buck Cannon: Tracy, does she know the kind of work you do best?
- Tracy Conlin: [chuckling] I reckon she has a notion.
- Fay Leyton: Cannons. Are they friends of yours?
- Tracy Conlin: Only friends I've got, ma'am, are my gun and the money in my pocket.
- Fay Leyton: Well, maybe I can introduce you to many more... friends.
- [drops a clattering pile of coins on the table]
- Tracy Conlin: [squinting in recognition] Buck Cannon. Tracy Conlin, remember me? It's a long time, old buddy.
- [passes out and collapses]
- Billy Blue Cannon: He a friend?
- Buck Cannon: Like he said, a long time ago. A man can travel a lot of miles and a lot of years. One day the past catches up to him. Like now. Tracy Conlin.
- Fay Leyton: I want the Cannons out of here. I want the High Chaparral. And I want both to happen as soon as possible.
