BOOK HIM; MURDER ONE
This is not that bad of a story, as some of the reviewers have noted. When you have two super heavies such as William Devane and Keene Curtis on board, what else do you need? Having been a FIVE O fan, particularly for the fine acting of Jack Lord, it's actually a nice change of pace as McGarrett, Danny and Duke nab thieves on a ship. The mechanics are there, all about smooth bank robbers getting their greedy hands on cold cash and bonds, and did we forget to mention a murder? The catch here is that Keene Curtis, who played his fair share of villains, is cast here as a victim. Then you have the great William Devane, always with a smirk, who you have to keep an eye on as to what lengths he's going. Curtis, long a stage actor and a Tony winner, had the range where he could also play light roles. Devane, who gained fame playing JFK, of course went on to co-star for many years as Greg on KNOTS LANDING. Prior to this episode he appeared on MANNIX. His father, by the way, was FDR's driver when he was governor of New York. As always, Jack Lord plays it smooth, not letting anyone out of his sight, always neat to watch him stare down a character of interest. According to footnotes, Lord was actually offered the lead as Elliot Ness on the UNTOUCHABLES, then the chance to play Captain Kirk on STAR TREK, this according to William Shatner. He was destined to be a tv star. We also have a scene where McGarrett seems to have a female admirer, and he wants nothing to do with her. Well, let's face it. This is not a pleasure cruise and old Steve is strictly business, which made him Mr. Cool in the first place. He never trusted anyone, or took anything for granted. I always thought of him as the Hawaiin Joe Mannix, minus the punches, He was trained to nail the hardcore villains, he was a methodical machine. Look for comedian John Byner as the ship entertainer, a suspect of sorts, if not a diversion. Well acted and directed. SEASON 6 CBS dvd box set.
