Man in a glass house

Hardcastle is quite upset when he is criticized in "Without Sin", the autobiography of retired mobster Joseph Cadillac. Figuring that the mob, also the subject of Cadillac's criticism, will be angered as well, Hardcastle has Mark follow the author. Mark's surveillance turns into a full blown car chase after Cadillac realizes that he is being tailed. Based on his driver's reckless driving, Cadillac is pulled over by the police and his car is impounded. Later, Hardcastle is surprised when Cadillac comes to him for help. Upon learning that the mob has kidnapped Cadillac's innocent son (a priest) in order to get the evidence the mobster used to write the book, Hardcastle agrees to help. One complication: The evidence is in the car that the police impounded (pending a judge's ruling regarding the legality of a search).

A typically energetic episode that features the usual humorous sparring between the two leads and some killer car chases - well, that last bit has Hardcastle driving a dirt bike. There's a fine performance by Joseph Campanella, who writes a book about his mob friends and mentions the judge as a short ape. But in the end he will need him to get his son back. One of the villains is played by Lance Henrikson.

Retired mobster Joseph Cadillac (John Marley) is a name in Judge Hardcastle's book of villains who has got away with some of their crimes.

When Cadillac writes a best selling autobiography that pokes fun of both Hardcastle and the LA police. The retired judge does not take it so well.

He persuades a reluctant McCormick to go gunning for him.

Only Cadillac's former mafia associates are not happy with his autobiography. Cadillac has dug up some old murders that they hope remain buried.

They send a problem eliminator Deseau (Lance Henriksen) to take back any incriminating evidence he has and then gun down Cadillac for good.

Deseau kidnaps Cadillac's son who is a priest. Now Hardcastle and McCormick ends up helping out the old gangster.

It is all so gloriously silly. You just cannot take it all seriously. Still both main leads have a good rapport and this is only the second story.

This was one of Marley's last role. Not a horse's head in sight.
