This was series co-creator John Meston's final script for Gunsmoke, after thirteen years of work on hundreds of stories and scripts, on both the radio and television versions of the program.
They keep referring to Russ Tamblyn as a youngster in this episode, but he was actually thirty at the time; and in the late 1800s life expectancy was around forty.
The episode's title may be derived from a (misquoted) line in Iago's remarks in William Shakespeare's "Othello", Act 3, Scene 3, lines 155-161: "Good name in man and woman, dear my lord, / Is the immediate jewel of their souls. / Who steals my purse steals trash; 'tis something, nothing; / 'Twas mine, 'tis his, and has been slave to thousands; / But he that filches from me my good name / Robs me of that which not enriches him, / And makes me poor indeed.".
Seventh and final Gunsmoke appearance by Harold J Stone.
