Did you know
- TriviaOne of MANY opportunities Florida(Esther Rolle) stop the family from moving forward or gaining financial success to leave the ghetto. Especially how she sees James work long and hard for low wages. Then in later episodes she complains about food prices, unpaid bills and not having enough money for a down payment for a house. She meant well, but hindered the family with her beliefs.
- Quotes
Florida Evans: [the scrawny, intoxicated messenger is about to leave] Hey, wait a minute, do you use Vita Brite?
Messenger: Day and night.
James Evans, Sr.: Damn, I'd hate to think what he looked like before he was using it.

Too honest for television
"The TV Commercial" opens with Florida ecstatic over being chosen by a commercial producer as an honest face to represent their product. James gets the wrong idea: "you ain't doin' no brassiere commercial!" The fateful telephone call selects Florida, at a pay scale up to $5000! JJ tries his hand at a pitch: "my husband James used to have slow blood, he would cut himself shaving on Monday and wouldn't bleed until Thursday!" James: "thanks to Vita Brite Health Tonic my blood is fast, fast, fast, now I bleed all the time!" As Florida reads the script she realizes that she's never used the product before: "they hired me for an honest face and I ain't gonna give it a crooked mouth!" The family tries to show her how actors tend to stretch the truth, and JJ mentions the Tidy Bowl man: "he's living dangerous, one flush and he's buried at sea!" For a product that's 18% alcohol, it's not long before Dean Martin gets a mention as the perfect pitchman!
