The FASHION WORLD Affair
John Carradine and Edward Andrews
Episode 5, "The Montori Device Affair" is a rather ho-hum chase, buoyed by a good cast. THRUSH are trying to learn the secret location of a diplomatic conference, with Prof. Boris Budge (John Carradine) and henchman Tullio (Ted Cassidy) keeping a watchful eye on fashion designer Conrad Rossano (Edward Andrews), the one man targeted by UNCLE as to how to recover the stolen Montori device monitoring all their communications. Virtually everyone comes off as bunglers, with poor April Dancer (Stephanie Powers) on the sidelines, spending most of the story waiting for instructions. Lead villain John Carradine proves a creepy sight, hair parted down the middle and thick glasses, using a small brainwashing device to force unwilling victims to cooperate. ADDAMS FAMILY co-stars Ted Cassidy and Lisa Loring are reunited, with the child actress given the privilege of wearing the Montori device, slipped unseen into her mother's apartment, only surrendering it to Mark Slate (Noel Harrison) for the final dance (even April dances). There were only 29 episodes during this one and only season, and THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E itself returned for just one final year. This was the last of three TV episodes in which Carradine was directed by veteran John Brahm ("The Undying Monster," "The Lodger," "Hangover Square"), after a 1958 SUSPICION ("A Touch of Evil") and 1961 THRILLER ("The Remarkable Mrs. Hawk").
