Gidget and the Gories
JordanThomasHall17 August 2017
Larue (Lynette Winter) takes Gidget (Sally Field) to the beach to meet two friends from her guitar class, Doug (Murray MacLeod) and Paul (Jimmy Hawkins, noted child actor who played a son to A-list celebrities of the 40s, including the role of Tommy Bailey from "It's a Wonderful Life"). With barely an introduction they become smitten by her and hand Gidget a tambourine to join the group "The Young People". The four begin performing folk music for classmates and get enough attention to be asked to headline the Color Day Show. Gidget is excited while Laure is miffed that the guys now struggle to even remember her name. Gidget writes into a variety show as if she's a theatrical agent promoting The Young People as a great upcoming group. Producer Mr. Rick Arden (familiar character actor Sandy Kenyon) books them for an on-the-air audition. They feel they have to change their image and becoming a Gothic "Gidget and the Gories" bringing in a drummer, Ringo Feinberg (Dennis Olivieri). The guys tell Gidget to tell Larue that she's out of the group, but she does the deed for Gidget. Now Gidget is questioning her involvement with the band. Her dad Mr. Lawrence (Don Porter) signs release papers for her to appear on television and takes them to Mr. Arden's office (Larry Tate's office from "Bewitched"). He finds that Mr. Arden most liked their clean image, which leads the band on an unexpected course.

THEY'RE SO FAR OUT... THEY'RE IN???

Joanna Lee wrote this real 60's-ish episode, connected to many top sitcoms at the time, including the FLINTSTONES. Lee was also somewhat of a cult figure, earlier in her career she had a role as one of the space aliens in PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE.

Gidget is on the brink of stardom!

Since she hangs at the beach, it was only a matter of time she met some artistic folks. Right? It turns out that Larue happens to have a few musician friends. The catch is they are immediately drawn to Gidget (totally forget Larue) and ask her to join their band --with a tambourine?

A new folk music group is born, except Gidget wants Larue. She dumps the guys and starts her own group, GIDGET AND THE GORIES! She also becomes her own agent and has the good luck(?) of going national.

The other side of the coin, as expected, fame has a price --and lawyers and contracts. A mess. Calling Gidget's dad, the wise, old professor, who has a little talk with his aspiring daughter. You know it was coming.

This is a very good episode that mixes comedy with a dose of Hollywood reality. Gidget learns another lesson, and especially does not lose old friend Larue.

10 Big Stars for Sally Field at her best.

A must see for all of us sentimental 60s rockers. Best of SEASON 1 remastered color/ABC dvd box set.
