The Tanner girls' impromptu trip to New Zealand is inspired by actual events. In 1985, California native Michael Lewis, coming home from vacation in West Germany, reached Los Angeles International Airport. He intended to take a connecting flight to his home in Oakland, but accidentally followed a crowd of passengers to the Air New Zealand terminal (there, he told employees his destination, but he was misheard as saying "Auckland" and was given a boarding pass). Upon reaching the city, Air New Zealand officials promptly gave Lewis a return ticket to Los Angeles.
In the previous season, Jesse teaches Michelle some words and says, "so we'll read a little each day, and before you know it, you'll be reading a book." Yet, in this season, Michelle can only spell the two words Jesse taught her: cat and hat.
Paige Tamada, the girl Michelle speaks to in the airport, would go on to play Judy the elf in The Santa Clause (1994).
The title is based on the 1957 song "Come Fly with Me" composed by Jimmy Van Heusen, with lyrics by Sammy Cahn and made a big hit by Frank Sinatra.
Starting with this episode, the closing credits now shows still images of the episode similar to the first 7 seasons of Perfect Strangers.
