- [last lines]
- Captain John Kieffer: I'm new here. I know how you British are always murdering each other, but I didn't expect to get caught up in it like that, so, uh... maybe I behaved like a jerk.
- Christopher Foyle: Well, you did much that was right.
- Captain John Kieffer: Can we put all this behind us?
- Christopher Foyle: Course.
- Captain John Kieffer: Good. And in the interest of furthering British - U.S. friendship, I happen to have a quart of Jack Daniels in the back. Don't suppose you'd care to come back to the base and help me in drinking it, would you?
- Christopher Foyle: To, um, help the war effort?
- Captain John Kieffer: Exactly.
- Christopher Foyle: Don't see why not.
- Captain John Kieffer: Climb aboard.
- [they get in the Jeep and start off]
- Christopher Foyle: By the way, what's a jerk?
- Captain John Kieffer: Ah, let me explain.
- Christopher Foyle: Nothing to do with dried meat?
- Captain John Kieffer: Nothing to do with dried meat. That's jerky.
- Christopher Foyle: That's jerky.
- Captain John Kieffer: Okay, look, a jerk is someone who... i-it's...
- Captain John Kieffer: So, how'd you get on with my rod?
- Christopher Foyle: Well, it's beautiful; it's just I'm not catching anything.
- Captain John Kieffer: Ah, it's a poor workman who blames his tools.
- Christopher Foyle: I, uh, take it you're not very, uh, happy to be here, then?
- Sergeant Jack Connor: You tried sucking up to Hitler, that didn't work, so you went to war with him. You almost lost that by yourself and now you've dragged us in. No, I'm not crazy to be here.
- Sergeant Ian Brooke: [briefing Foyle when he arrives at the station] Yes, and there's a gentleman waiting for you, sir. I didn't know what to do with him, so I put him in your office. Name of Kieffer, Captain. He's a Yank.
- Samantha Stewart: Have the Americans arrived in Hastings?
- Christopher Foyle: Er, looks like one of them has.
- Samantha Stewart: You know, I've never actually seen an American. Except in the films.
- Sergeant Ian Brooke: [in a poor voice imitation] Jimmy Cagney!
- [laughs]
- Sergeant Ian Brooke: All cowboys or gangsters.
- Samantha Stewart: I was thinking more of Clark Gable.
- [Foyle raises his eyebrows]
- Sergeant Ian Brooke: Oh yeah?
- Harold Grayson: [after Susan Davies tells the regulars at the Wheatsheaf pub that the "doughboys" or American troops have just arrived in Hastings] Americans. Late for the last one, late joining this one.
- Samantha Stewart: [Pte. Joe Farnetti is trying to ask Sam out in a forward manner] I don't even know you.
- Joe Farnetti: Well, here's your chance to find out.
- Samantha Stewart: And you don't know me either. Are all you Americans like this?
- Joe Farnetti: I can't speak for the others.
- Samantha Stewart: I'm afraid I'm busy tonight.
- Joe Farnetti: How about tomorrow night?
- Samantha Stewart: Even busier.
- [Foyle and Capt. Kieffer come out of the office]
- Joe Farnetti: Well, I'm here for a lot of nights.
- Christopher Foyle: [sees Farnetti and looks at Sam] Everything all right?
- Samantha Stewart: Uh-huh.
- Captain John Kieffer: Mr Foyle, thank you for everything and let me know how you get on.
- [shakes his hand]
- Christopher Foyle: I will.
- Captain John Kieffer: Farnetti.
- Joe Farnetti: Captain.
- [winks at Sam]
- Joe Farnetti: I'll be seeing you.
- [she smiles]
- Christopher Foyle: [to Sam when the Americans leave] Clark Gable?
- [Sam grins]
