When Jack goes to visit Geoff Bate at Handcross Garage, there is a white Jaguar XK120, registration number NUB 120, in a prominent position on the garage forecourt. This is a very famous car which won the Alpine Rally in 1950, driven by Ian Appleyard and navigated by his wife Pat, the daughter of Sir William Lyons, former managing director of Jaguar.
