At one point, Tony Van Leer (Walter Janssen) agrees to sign with F.C. De Kampioenen. He tells Boma he's refused an offer from an amateur team at highest provincial level. This is actually surreal for him to do. At his age there's not much sense in refusing the money that can be earned from this level of play, next to his main occupation, with De Kampioenen an enthusiasts' soccer team paying him considerably less.
In the locker room Oscar, discussing tactics, mentions one of the players' names: "Pol". He affectionately calls him "Polleke", a diminutive. It indicates a "Pol" played for the team before main character Pol De Tremmerie (Ben Rottiers) joined (after Oscar and Pico left). "Pol", compared to "Pol De Tremmerie", has a small stature. Despite this, he plays as a center-back while the much taller Pol De Tremmerie is a forward. Pol leaves by the time Pol De Tremmerie joins. It was never revealed Pol served as inspiration for Pol De Tremmerie.
Dimitri uses the verb "keren" (literally "to turn") as a synonym for the verb "to sweep". This is now a very outdated word to describe the deed of sweeping the floor. In the same scene, Tony uses the outdated word "onderhoud" (literally "maintenance"), now as per usual "sollicitatiegesprek", to refer to "job interview". The word "onderhoud", in this sense, is still used to refer to a conversation in general.
Bieke's puppy love with Tony serves as a subplot to Boma signing him as the new forward of the soccer team. Bieke's story arc was the reason behind "Verliefd" being banned in Flanders for over six years. Its content has her parents Oscar and Pascale struggling with inclusion of people of a different race. However, it seemed to be a problem of that period in time, not just those characters.
When negotiating his contract with Oscar and Boma in Oscar's living room, Tony wears the same Christmas sweater Pico wears in Voetbalploeg zoekt trainer (1990), for instance.
