- Enterprise follows a lead and discovers a Xindi lab that refines Kemocite, the key ingredient in the weapon being built to destroy Earth. An away team of Archer, Reed and Hayes confront the lead researcher, Gralik Durr, who was employed by Degra to refine the Kemocite but was never told what it would be used for. When Gralik realizes it was his research that contributed to the 7 million deaths on Earth, he agrees to help Archer prevent further loss of life. Meanwhile, on Enterprise, Phlox and Tucker study the weapon they seized from the Xindi and find an organic component, a life-form serving as the rifle's power cell. Despite T'Pol's objection, Tucker tests the weapon.—Meribor
- At the Xindi Council, Degra (Randy Oglesby) reports that the weapon to destroy Earth should be ready in a matter of weeks (They want to test it on another uninhabited planet, but need another shipment of Kemocite (100 Kgs) to finish it). The coordinates provided by Tarquin (in "Exile") lead the Enterprise to a planet, and the crew decide to hide the ship behind a moon while a shuttle-pod manned by Captain Archer, Lieutenant Reed and Major Hayes (Steven Culp) approaches it. Evading detection, they land and enter a Xindi settlement, where they find a great quantity of Kemocite (A Radiolytic compound) being refined. They then observe Gralik Durr (John Cothran, Jr) and two associates discussing the deal (Gralik was not enthused about mining such large quantities of Kemocite) they have to mine the Kemocite for Degra. The away team then beams up a canister of Kemocite for analysis, and then follow Gralik back to his home, where they confront him. Gralik denies any knowledge of the weapon Degra is building or where. Its been 3 months since the Enterprise entered the expanse.
T'Pol's analysis shows that the Xindi probe which attacked Earth (in "The Expanse") contained Kemocite. Archer then tells Gralik that Degra will use the Kemocite to build a weapon, but the Arboreal denies any knowledge of the plan. Back on Enterprise, Commander Tucker also learns that the Kemocite is the key to Reptilian rifle technology. Archer approves his idea to reverse engineer a rifle, but Tucker unknowingly triggers a self-destruct sequence and the weapon is beamed into space, where it explodes.
On the planet, Archer decides not to destroy the Kemocite mining complex as he does not want the Xindi to think of them as aggressors. Archer goes back to Gralik and shows him pieces of the probe that attacked Earth. Gralik explains that Degra told him that the Kemocite was for research, and explains how the Avian race (The 6th Xindi species, who died when reptilians and Insectoids detonated massive explosives beneath the geological fissures of the their home-world, which resulted in the destruction of the entire planet and extinction of the Avians) were assumed to be made extinct in the Xindi Civil War. A Reptilian shuttle arrives 3 days early, carrying Degra, to collect the final shipment of 100 kilograms of Kemocite. Gralik takes the away team to a cave that will protect them from scans (He tells Archer that he is determined not to be part of genocide again, and promises to fetch more information for him), but they are soon discovered by robotic drones sent by the Reptilians. Archer decides to trust Gralik and send him back into the facility to meet Degra. When Gralik returns home, he is confronted by Degra, who reveals the true purpose of the Kemocite, to build a weapon to destroy a ruthless alien species.
T'Pol in the meantime has modified the canister of Kemocite so that the ship can track it. Archer manages to sneak it aboard the Xindi shuttle and after the Reptilians leave, Archer thanks Gralik for his trust and help. Enterprise loses the tracking signal when the reptilian ship enters the space vortex.
