- After an attack by a mysterious ship, Archers orders Enterprise's return to Jupiter to install phase cannons; Hoshi makes plans for Malcolm's birthday.
- The crew of Enterprise is installing a subspace amplifier when an unidentified ship drops out of warp. No contact is made and the ship disappears as suddenly as it came. But the mystery ship returns and this time it's a lot more hostile; Enterprise is severely damaged. Archer is sick of being constantly left at the mercy of alien ships. Despite the objection of Reed and Tucker who think they can do it themselves, he orders Enterprise to return to Jupiter station to install phase cannons. Meanwhile Hoshi must find out the favorite food of Reed. Archer wants to surprise him on his birthday party.—Arnoud Tiele (imdb@tiele.nl)
- While launching subspace amplifiers to increase their transmission range, the Enterprise encounters an alien spacecraft that does not reply Captain Archer's hails. The craft vanishes and returns blasting Enterprise, and T'Pol realizes that thy do not have suitable armament to face the hostile enemy. Archer orders Ensign Travis to return to Jupiter Station to install three phase cannons in Enterprise. Reed and Tucker object, telling that their men could build and install the weapons, but Archer keeps his orders and authorizes them to begin the work. Meanwhile Archer gives a direct order to Hoshi to find out the favorite food of Reed for his sooner birthday party.—Claudio Carvalho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
- In September 2151, while deploying subspace amplifiers to improve their ability to communicate with Starfleet, Enterprise is approached by an alien vessel. Captain Archer hails them, but the vessel returns to warp. The Enterprise sensors cant register any life signs, no weapons, no reactor, nothing. Archer wonders why: Ensign Sato points out that the Universal Translator is far from perfect; and Sub-Commander T'Pol says that some species have motives that cannot be understood in human terms. Soon, the mysterious ship returns and scans Enterprise, sending a high pitched screech through the com systems, and firing on them before again jumping to warp.
Meanwhile Archer uses the subspace amplifiers to speaks to Reed's parents. Reed's birthday is approaching and Archer wanted to find out his favorite food. Reed's parents say Reed doesn't have any favorites when it comes to food. Reed's father says they are a Navy family and is slightly angry that reed chose to join Starfleet. Sato is assigned to speak to Reed's sister to figure out what he likes to eat. T'Pol suggests that Sato should speak to Reed directly. Reed thinks Sato is hitting on him.. Sato speaks to Phlox, who digs into Reed's medical files to figure out that Reed takes regular injections to suppress his allergy to Bromelin (which is found in pineapples).. When the aliens fired, they dropped shields and Reed gets a scan of 15 bio signs, but nothing that matches the known DNAs on file.
Archer notes that Enterprise is now encountering more aggressive species than anticipated, and sets course for Earth so that Jupiter Station can finish the weapons refit on the Enterprise (specifically the phase plasma cannons, which weren't installed as the ship left port ahead of schedule). Commander Tucker and Reed ask to be allowed to complete the work themselves, but Archer disagrees, though he gives them permission to begin the procedure. Reed and Tucker start installing the one prototype Plasma cannon that they do have on board.
While doing so, the alien ship returns and disables Enterprise's warp drive and main power. Strange alien bipeds then board the ship, and assault two crew-members. They return to their ship, damaging a warp nacelle (they are venting drive plasma now) before departing again. Mayweather suggests contacting the Vulcan High Command for help, but both subspace amplifiers have been destroyed.
Two days later, Enterprise locates an uninhabited planet for a weapons test (from the newly installed plasma cannon prototype), which produces a blast yield 10 times the expected output, due to an unexpected surge. T'Pol traces the anomalous reading to Launch Bay 2, to a device tapped into internal sensors and comm channels.
Archer then sends the aliens a message: he does not want a fight but will protect his ship by any means necessary. With that, he destroys the device. T'Pol detects the alien vessel again, which uses a re-edited version of Archer's earlier message to demand surrender. After the new cannons are ineffective against their attacker, Archer asks if Reed can intentionally repeat the previous overload of the cannons. Reed complies and damages the alien vessel, knocking out their shields. Reed follows up with two torpedoes before the aliens go to warp. Reed gets a pineapple cake and turns out, it is his favorite.
