The Apgar score is a way to quickly assess the health of a newborn, it is done at both one and five minutes after birth. The score is determined by five criteria: skin color, pulse, reflex, muscle tone and respiration. Each criteria can receive a score of 0 to 2, with the total score being used to evaluate the health of the baby; a score of seven or above is normal, four to six is low indicating close monitoring for an additional 30 minutes and a score of under three is critical and calls for immediate resuscitation. The Apgar was developed in 1952 by obstetrical anesthesiologist Virginia Apgar, the criteria for has changed very little since its inception and is still the standard for newborn evaluation, it is endorsed by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecology and the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Maura Tierney (Abby Lockhart) & Julianna Margulies (Carol Hathaway) also worked together on the fourth season of The Good Wife (2009).
