- Rob recalls the hilarious events leading up to Ritchie's birth when Ritchie asks the inevitable question.
- Rob feels uncomfortable when Ritchie asks him a question most kids eventually ask: "where did I come from?" Rob gets around the question by filling Ritchie in on the events surrounding the day he was born, the only aspect Ritchie ever having been told previously having to do with being delivered by a laundry truck. Throw into the story that an excitable Rob got little sleep for the week prior to the actual delivery day in anticipation of it happening at any moment, that he slept in his clothes for that week, that he had a staff conference meeting that day, and that he was by circumstance wearing a very ill fitting pair of trousers, and the result is that Rob had a lot of trouble getting Laura to the hospital either in time or looking good doing it.—Huggo
- Rob, Laura and their son, Richie, are sitting in the living room one night before Richie has to go to bed. Richie is looking through a family photo album. Richie has a few questions about the day he was born, particularly "Where did I come from?" Rob is a bit flustered at first, thinking he has to give his some the talk about the facts of life but Richie remembers Rob telling him Laura was driven to the hospital in a laundry truck.
In the last few days before Richie was born, Rob is a nervous wreck. He obsessively fusses over Laura and has been getting little sleep. When the doctor tells Rob and Laura that she'll probably go into labor in the next few days, Rob becomes uncontrollably nervous. Laura is frustrated but takes Rob's anxiety very calmly and coolly. Rob simply can't understand how Laura can be so calm.
One night after Rob pesters Laura a bit too much, Laura orders him to get some sleep. She accidentally knocks her alarm clock off the nightstand and Rob springs into action, jumping out of bed, grabbing his hat behind his headboard and pulling off his bathrobe, revealing that he'd been sleeping in his suits, which are wrinkled. He snatches his coat and Laura's bags and is ready to drive her to the hospital when Laura stops him, saying she'd just dropped her alarm clock. After a few moments of Rob resetting his routine, which includes aligning the bags the proper way and aligning his hat on the shelf, he climbs back into bed and takes the phone under the covers with him.
The next morning, Laura's friend Millie, who is also pregnant with her 2nd child, calls to check on Laura. Rob answers the phone and, seeing Laura has already gotten up, panics and assumes she went to the hospital without him. Laura, who's also answered the phone, tries to calm Rob down by saying she's in the kitchen preparing breakfast by boiling water for eggs. Rob panics further, thinking she's doing it in preparation for giving birth in the house. When Millie comes to breakfast, she tells Laura that her own husband, Jerry, acted the same way Rob has, sleeping in his clothes (an idea that Rob has borrowed). Millie also gives Rob his car keys - Rob had started the car a couple hours earlier, just in case. Rob is a wreck before going to work: all his suits are badly wrinkled and he even mistakenly kisses Millie goodbye, thinking she was Laura.
Rob arrives at the office where Buddy jokes with him about how his clothes look terrible and Sally reminds him that they have a big meeting with Alan Brady and that Rob can't go to the meeting with his suit so badly wrinkled. Rob has her call a nearby dry cleaner's for a one-hour pressing. Just then their boss, Mel Cooley, comes in to check with Rob on one of the show's scripts. In the confusion of Rob trying to get his pants off for the dry cleaner, Willie, the coffee and pastry busker in the building, comes in with a large cart of his pastry. Willie begins to hawk his products, frustrating Mel and interfering with the process of getting Rob's suit to the dry cleaner. Rob hands his suit across the pastries, dirtying it further and knocks several of them onto the floor. Just then Sally gets a call from Laura; she's ready to go to the hospital. Rob jumps into action, trying to grab the phone but Buddy accidentally hits Rob in the face with it, giving Rob a black eye. Rob realizes he can't leave until he gets some pants. Buddy loans his pants to Rob -- they don't fit him and he has to hold them by the waistband -- and Rob takes off to drive home, telling Sally to call a cab company and send a driver to his house.
At home, Laura is waiting with Millie, who has her car parked in the driveway. They hear a car pull up but it's not Rob, it's the cab he had Sally send. Rob arrives but he pulls into the driveway too fast and hits the cab, driving it into Millie's car and locking all the bumpers together. Rob runs in. Laura tries to calm him down but he's too panicky. Because all the cars are immobilized, he decides to call the police and have them send a squad car. Laura tells him he forgot to give them their address. Just then Charlie, the laundry service guy, walks in. Rob asks if he can give them a ride to the hospital in his truck and Charlie cheerfully says he can.
Back in the present, Rob finishes the story for a happy and humored Richie, who then goes to bed.
