Laura finds old campaign buttons in the desk, of three people: Charles Evans Hughes, William Jennings Bryan and Thomas E. Dewey. Hughes (1862-1948) was the 11th Chief Justice of the United States (1930-1941) and the 36th Governor of New York (1907-1910). Bryan (1860-1925) was the 41st United States Secretary of State (1913-1915) under President Woodrow Wilson. Dewey (1902-1971) was the 47th Governor of New York (1943-1954) and was the Republican nominee for President of The United States in 1944, losing to Franklin D. Roosevelt and carrying only 12 of the 48 states.
