Rob Petrie's being stationed at Camp Crowder originated from writer/producer Carl Reiner's stationed in the same location while serving in the Army.

Laura's maiden name in this episode, Meeker, was once Mary Tyler Moore's married name in real life. She divorced Dick Meeker sometime in 1961, the first year of the Dick van Dyke Show. They had one child, Richie, the name of Rob and Laura's only child in the show (although that name was used in the pilot, which starred Barbara Britton in the role of Laura Petrie).
Dick Van Dyke and Mark Mullen were both in the military during World War II. Marty Ingels, his Army buddy in the show not only never saw military service, he was only five years old by the time the United States entered the war.
