After Mark has listened to the phone recording for the umpteenth time, Steve tells him that the technical people have checked it and there are no "ships's sirens or church bells". The same line is used in Conan Doyle's story "The Greek Interpreter", when Sherlock Holmes is questioning what could be heard from a carriage. The quote does not, however, appear in the original story - only the television version.
