Quotes

  • Dr. Leonard Gould : I demand you get Sloan in here right now.

Dr. Mark Sloan : Already done, Doctor.

Dr. Leonard Gould : You may be Chief of Internal Medicine, Sloan, but you overstepped your authority. Ordering tests on my patient?

Dr. Mark Sloan : Tests you should've ordered yourself.

Dr. Leonard Gould : I don't have to admit my patients here, you know. I can always take them to...

Dr. Mark Sloan : To another HMO facility. Well, you are the gatekeeper after all.

Dr. Leonard Gould : Oh, Sloan, that's what this is all about, huh? You think this about HMO procedures, do you? Well, you're wrong. This bottomed-lined doctor-to-doctor medical ethics. Mrs. Rizzoli is admitted for routine minor surgery. Lipoma excision. And then you at Community General Hospital move in with the obvious motivation of running up enormous bills by a lot of unnecessary procedures. *This* is the grossest kind of ethical lapse.

Harold 'Hal' F. Lomax : Dr. Gould, I am sure that we can settle this without any kind of...

Dr. Leonard Gould : You gonna let him get away with this? Because I'm not. We'll just see what the County Medical Society and the State Licensing Board will do. Got anything to say, Sloan? You tell me what excuse can you make, what possible justification can you have?

[Mark gives Gould a piece of paper]

Dr. Leonard Gould : "Microcytic anemia. Positive occult blood in the stool."

[Mark gives Gould another piece of paper]

Dr. Leonard Gould : "Mark CEA elevation 65.8."

Harold 'Hal' F. Lomax : Excuse me, what the hell is going on here?

Dr. Mark Sloan : They're the results of the tests on Lena Rizzoli. The endoscopic report shows it without question. Advanced colon cancer. A pathology report made biopsy makes it very clear. The cancer's been developing for at least eight months. Widespread beyond the colon. And the symptoms. The continuous anemia, the weakness, the unexplained weight loss, the pain in the abdomen, been interpreted to call for tests when she reported it, the early stages could've been spotted and the prognosis would've been a lot different at this point. As it is, the CAT scan shows widespread metastasis to the liver.

Dr. Leonard Gould : We'll, uh, have to call in an oncologist. You know Malcolm McAuliffe?

Dr. Mark Sloan : Mm. Good man. Probably call for cryotherapy or, uh, possible removal of the lesions. Either one is very successful over often. Of course, the chemotherapy.

Dr. Leonard Gould : Excuse me, please. I think I should go downstairs and see Mrs. Rizzoli. You think this started eight months back?

Dr. Mark Sloan : The natural history of colon cancer suggests it's been at least that long.

Dr. Leonard Gould : Eight months.

Harold 'Hal' F. Lomax : How long has she got?

Dr. Mark Sloan : Well, I'm no specialist, Hal. Six months, maybe a year.

Harold 'Hal' F. Lomax : Well, I'll talk to McAuliffe. See what you can do for her.

Dr. Mark Sloan : Six months to a year of chemotherapy. You think Lifesys Inc. is gonna pay for that one?
