Back From Cancer Surgery

This particular episode of the Dean Martin Show is memorable because none other than the Duke himself guest starred on it. It was one of two he did for pal Dino.

I believe and I'm sure John Wayne fans will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this was the first appearance of John Wayne after his cancer surgery in public. I remember the Duke looking none the worst for wear considering his ordeal.

The second reason for going on Dean's show was of course to plug the latest John Wayne western which happened to co-star Dean Martin, The Sons of Katie Elder. I believe we got a clip from the film in the show.

And I remember Dean and the Duke doing a duet of Everybody Loves Somebody. Singing was not Wayne's thing and for what he really sounded like, hear him do that remarkable version of The Moon Shines Tonight On Pretty Redwing in McLintock.

Dean did some real singing with Peggy Lee and Jack Jones on this show, but he and John Wayne had a grand old time together.
