The scene between Swearengen and Hearst was originally going to occur earlier in the episode, and was shot during daylight. In the edit it was decided to move the scene to later in the episode. This created a continuity problem, since several preceding scenes take place at night. So the scene was digitally altered to appear as though it was shot at night.
Gerald McRaney was initially cast for just three episodes at the start of season three. But the producers were so impressed by his performance that he ended up as the main antagonist for the entire season.

Al Swearengen's first name is revealed as Albert.
When Trixie is mocking Adams' acting job in the hardware store she refers to him as "Mrs. Bernhardt." That is a reference to Sarah Bernhardt (originally Henriette-Rosine Bernard) a famous French actress of the time known globally, having first toured in the United States in 1880.
