- Lucy Ewing: I don't know. Mitch is so darn stubborn. All he ever thinks about is going to medical school and studying.
- Sue Ellen Ewing: Well, Lucy, you should consider yourself very lucky. Ambition is a fine quality to have in a man.
- [Pamela looks down]
- Sue Ellen Ewing: Isn't It, Pamela?
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: I suppose so. If the ambition doesn't become an obsession.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: You were up early this morning.
- Bobby Ewing: I went out for a drive. I haven't been sleeping too well lately.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: I know. Want help?
- Bobby Ewing: No. No, nobody can help. Just a lot of things going on, problems I have to solve.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: There was a time when you discussed your problems with me. Or is it now all your problems have to do with running Ewing Oil, you don't think I'll understand?
- Bobby Ewing: Of course not, honey, you know how I value your opinion.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Oh, really?
- Bobby Ewing: Oh, sure. These are just things I have to work out on my own.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Fine, Bobby.
- [gets up to leave]
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: You do that.
- Bobby Ewing: Pamela.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: [angrily] We all have problems. I thought it would help if we tried to solve them together.
- Mitch Cooper: Oh, this is Lucy. Lucy this is my mother, and my sister Afton.
- Lucy Ewing: Hi, Mrs. Cooper. So very nice to meet you. Hi, Afton.
- Afton Cooper: Hi.
- Arliss Cooper: It's just such a pleasure to make your acquaintance. Mitch wrote so much about you.
- Mitch Cooper: Oh, nothing good.
- Arliss Cooper: Oh, Mitchell, now you stop that.
- [to Lucy:]
- Arliss Cooper: He said nothing but good things about you. Looks like he didn't say enough.
- Lucy Ewing: Well, thank you.
- Mitch Cooper: Oh, come on. She's spoiled enough already.
- Lucy Ewing: [playfully slaps his shoulder] No, I'm not!
- Afton Cooper: [to Lucy] You really have all that money?
- Arliss Cooper: Afton!
- Afton Cooper: [shrugs] Just wanted to know.
- Lucy Ewing: Well, uh, I don't. But my family sure does.
- Arliss Cooper: Now, Lucy, no matter what my son says, there is absolutely no reason to feel sorry about having a lot of money.
- Mitch Cooper: Come on, there's got to be a hundred other things we can talk about besides money.
- Afton Cooper: [to Lucy] Why don't you tell us about the wedding? I bet thats going to be something.
- Mitch Cooper: Oh, uh, come on. Let's get the bags, or I'm gonna be late for school, all right?
- Lucy Ewing: Why don't I drop you off, and then we'll go on to your apartment, okay?
- Afton Cooper: All right. Let's go.
- Arliss Cooper: Good.
- Afton Cooper: [to Lucy] You know, ever since Mitch wrote us about the wedding, I've been reading up on your family.
- Lucy Ewing: Oh, don't blame them on me. By the way, I'd really like it if you could be one of my bridesmaids.
- Afton Cooper: [enthusiastically] Oh, you would?
- Lucy Ewing: Yeah! Don't you think it would be fun?
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: [enters bedroom wearing long flowing night robe] Bobby?
- Bobby Ewing: [lies on bed, busy studying documents] Yeah, honey?
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Can you finish that in the morning?
- Bobby Ewing: No, sweetie, I can't. I have to finish it tonight. I have a meeting first thing in the morning.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: [climbs onto bed] Hey. I know you're under a lot of pressure. And I know things haven't been very good between us lately. And maybe a lot of it is my fault. But, Bobby, it seems like we don't spend any time together anymore. Everything's changing.
- Bobby Ewing: Honey, I know I spend a lot of time at work, but why do you think that changes things between us?
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Well, we haven't made love in weeks. That tells me something.
- Bobby Ewing: Come on now.
- [shakes his head]
- Bobby Ewing: It hasn't been that long.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: No? When was the last time?
- [he looks at her at a loss for words, then looks down]
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Well, that's wonderful, Bobby, you can't even remember. One of us is slipping, and I don't think it's me.
- [she rises from bed, he places his hand on her shoulder]
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: No one has ever made love to me out of pity, and it's not gonna start now.
- J.R. Ewing: [after they kissed passionately] Well, that leaves four things.
- Afton Cooper: I don't believe we'd best find out what they are today.
- J.R. Ewing: But soon?
- [she smiles]
- Louella: [on phone] I may not make it back for another hour or two, Connie.
- Connie Brasher: Well, It's pretty quiet here now. But I wish you'd hurry back in case Bobby needs me.
- Louella: Well, I'm sure that what J.R. has me doing is just as important as what's going on in the office.
- Connie Brasher: [impatient] All right. Bye.
- [cradles receiver]
- J.R. Ewing: [turns out Louella is lying in bed with J.R. and he plants a kiss] Well, what did she say was going on in the office?
- Louella: It's very quiet. You know, It's funny. When I first started to work for you, I never thought we'd be...
- [kisses J.R]
- Louella: You know..
- J.R. Ewing: Well, these things take time. I never appreciated all your marvelous qualities until... until recently.
- [pulls on her earlobe]
- Louella: But sometimes I feel like it's not right because I'm married and all...
- J.R. Ewing: Hey, now, it's not your fault your husbands on the road all the time.
- Louella: I know, but...
- J.R. Ewing: Well, I don't think he appreciates you. Leastways, not like I do. All those weeks that you kept me informed as to what was happening at the office when I was gone, that was invaluable to me.
- Louella: I'm doing it because I think you should be running Ewing Oil, not Bobby.
- J.R. Ewing: Well, I thank you for that. I think you're gonna have a tough time convincing Connie of that, however.
- Louella: I cant even talk to Connie about Bobby. I think she's got a thing for him.
- J.R. Ewing: [realizes potential of this] Oh? They spend a lot of time together?
- Louella: Not the way she would like. He's so busy being the big boss that he doesn't have time for anything else. I don't know how his wife can handle it.
- J.R. Ewing: Well, she may be getting him back sooner than she thinks. Especially if you keep old J.R. informed as to what's happening at the office.
- Louella: You just tell me what you want, and I'll do it.
- [J.R. whispers something in her ear, she giggles, and they cuddle]
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: [latest fashion pictures] What do you think, Jackie?
- Jackie Dugan: I think that's what Liz had in mind.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Maybe you'd better use these too.
- [hands over more]
- Jackie Dugan: Isn't Liz expecting you for a meeting?
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Well, that was before the meeting was postponed from this morning. Make my excuses for me, okay? I gotta get home.
- Jackie Dugan: Okay, have a nice evening.
- [phone rings]
- Jackie Dugan: Shall I get that?
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: No, I got it. Bye-bye. Hello. Pamela Ewing.
- Alex Ward: Alex Ward.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Well, hello.
- Alex Ward: [chuckles] Well, that's a start. I wasn't sure you'd even talk to me.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Of course I'm talking to you.
- Alex Ward: Good. I had the distinct impression you were trying to avoid me. I want to see you, Pam.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Well, I'm not trying to avoid you, Alex. I don't feel that I should see you.
- Alex Ward: [chuckles] I told you I was willing to overlook the fact that you're married.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: But I'm not.
- Alex Ward: Pamela, if your marriage is good I can't hurt it. If not, what have you got to lose? Have dinner with me.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Look, Alex, I've got to go to my family dinner, and I'm running late. I have to go.
- Alex Ward: But...
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Goodbye.
- [cradles receiver]
- J.R. Ewing: [very attentive to Mitch's sister] Can I get you a cold drink or something?
- Afton Cooper: No, thank you.
- J.R. Ewing: I must say, beauty certainly runs in your family.
- [chuckles]
- J.R. Ewing: I understand they raise these huge magnolias down in Mississippi. Is that right?
- Afton Cooper: Yeah, that's true.
- J.R. Ewing: And is it true what they say about the alligators down in Mississippi?
- Afton Cooper: Yeah.
- J.R. Ewing: It is?
- Afton Cooper: Yeah, it is true.
- [he chuckles, while Sue Ellen looks on knowing full well where all this is leading]
- Afton Cooper: They're all along the sides of the road.
- J.R. Ewing: Yeah, you're kidding. Are they really?
- Afton Cooper: And the Spanish moss is hanging... from the trees. It's pretty scary.
- J.R. Ewing: [laughing] And they sing songs like "doo-dah, doo-dah day"?
- Afton Cooper: [walking into bedroom 'accidentally'] Oh, my goodness. Excuse me, I was looking for Lucy's room. I left my sweater there.
- J.R. Ewing: Getting chilly, is it?
- [knows It's not]
- Afton Cooper: Some.
- J.R. Ewing: How you liking Dallas?
- Afton Cooper: Yeah, I love it.
- J.R. Ewing: And Southfork?
- Afton Cooper: It's beautiful. I've never seen anything like it. You sure are lucky to live here.
- J.R. Ewing: Yeah, I guess so. Well, your being here adds more beauty to it.
- Afton Cooper: Well, it sure puts Mississippi to shame. I almost hate to go back.
- J.R. Ewing: Well, since you're almost a member of the family...
- [closes bedroom door]
- J.R. Ewing: Well, it seems a shame to lose you so soon.
- Afton Cooper: Wouldn't take much to talk me out of it.
- J.R. Ewing: Talking's the second best thing I do.
- Afton Cooper: [soft snicker] I guess talking is about... the fifth best thing I do.
