Rik Mayall's bizarre attire was designed by Mayall himself. The rest of the cast had never seen it prior to his entrance in the wedding scene and were falling about in fits of laughter while Mayall was being filmed.
Rik Mayall accepted his guest role on the condition that he get more laughs than Rowan Atkinson. According to Tony Robinson, after filming, Mayall asked, "Did I win?"
This was actually intended as the second episode of the series. However, the BBC executives decided that Rik Mayall's performance as Lord Flashheart was so funny that this episode deserved to be first instead.
The sequences on location in which Blackadder courts Bob were filmed at the same location as the ending titles of each episode (Wilton House, Wiltshire), and was the only location filming done for this series of Blackadder.
John Lloyd has said that Rik Mayall virtually rewrote his part to feature "loads of jokes", which annoyed the writers, Richard Curtis and Ben Elton.
