THE REX GOODBODY BAD STORY.
Why we love Granny.
Crazy stuff from the super comedy writing team of Paul Henning and Mark Tuttle, who may have been soap opera fans themselves. You have to admit, soapers have the reputation of "stretching" a story, so why not get Granny into the mix?
Latest scandal -- she believes the soap opera she's watching is TRUE, and there's some horrible news.... The great doc Rex Goodbody, marvelously played by John Dehner, is suffering from one of those tv land mystery illnesses and hasn't got long to live. No choice but to undergo an emergency operation. How can this be!
Granny goes NUTS, and concludes the only humane thing to do is volunteer her valuable medical knowledge and save the poor man's life, the sooner the better. Classic scenes between Granny and Rex, the dialogue is priceless, as only Henning and Tuttle could come up with. John Dehner, who could play just about any type of role --although he made a fantastic villain -- is tops. Director Joseph Depew, wisely, just let the camera roll.
Look for Grandon Rhodes, known for playing the doc on BONANZA and the judge on PERRY MASON. Can't top this cast, or this wacky story for sure.
By the way, if you're a long time fan of the show, this episode does borrow bits from a previous episode where Granny had to rescue a female tv wrestler.
10 Stars, and thanks to Irene Ryan for making all of us laugh out loud, then and now. She is missed.
Catch the ending shot outside the studio, General Service Studios in Hollywood, still there after all these years, though modernized, now called Las Palmas Studios.
SEASON 6 EPISODE 26 remastered. According to Amazon, seasons 6 through 9 will be available on blu ray by 2027. Season 1 through 5 are always available, and with some unforgettable box cover family photos, which are collectors items.
