Storyline

- TriviaThis was Burgess Meredith's final appearance as the Penguin on the series. The character did make a brief cameo in the series' penultimate episode, but an unknown actor played the role, while Meredith appeared uncredited as The Penguin (but not in his actual costume and without his fake nose) in a silent cameo, except a light sqawking laugh, in Monkees Blow Their Minds (1968), which was the penultimate episode of that series.
- GoofsThe Penguin couldn't possibly have tainted the supply of printed money by breaking into the U.S. Mint, because the Mint is only responsible for minting coins. Paper currency falls under the exclusive purview of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing.

FAREWELL TO THE PENGUIN.
Say it isn't so.
As the series was coming to a close, this was the last episode to feature outrageous contageous Penguin. Burgess Meredith was so popular, the producers always had a script ready to go, depending on his busy film schedule. He was more than happy to oblige, and it showed. Doing some research, Meredith's performance as a mad scientist (who produced earthquakes) in the WILD WILD WEST (1965), may have inspired William Dozier to cast him as the Penguin the following year. Makes sense.
In his farewell gig, the chain-smoking, quack quacking master villain develops a bizarro plan to infect the country's money supply. He wants to break into the US Mint and contaminate the ink. Now that's original.
END RESULT: "sleeping sickness"? And what about the release of thousands of fruit flies to invade Gotham?
Monique van Voreen, a former skater and model, makes her second appearance playing Penguin's bad girl, Miss Clean. Love that name. She reportedly spoke as many as six languages, and still looking like a 20 something model at age 40. She passed in 2020. Charles Dierkop plays Dustbag, a regular in tv cop shows, usally the member of some gang planning a heist. Turned up a lot on MANNIX.
VILLAINESS WATCH: Next to appear is Calamity Jan, played by Dina Merrill, in a brief cameo here. Merrill, popular in dramatic films (BUTTERFIELD 8, THE SUNDOWNERS) gained a new generation of fans with this offbeat part, another possible replacement for Eartha Kitt's Catwoman.
The goof is CORRECT. The US Mint only handles coins, not paper money, but whose keeping score. Sit back and enjoy the insanity on steroids!
Burgess Meredith's next film project was SKIDOO with Jackie Gleason.
SEASON 3 restored dvd box set. The color is the Best. Two dvd boxes; released 2007 and 2015.
