Capt. Barney Miller: Suicide is not an acceptable solution, not to mention the fact that it happens to be against the law

Ivor Francis and Ian Wolfe
"The Tontine" (its story credited to actor/writer Dick Wesson) finds cousins Ivor Francis (third of four) and Ian Wolfe (second of two) the last surviving family members left to claim a 1933 tontine, which is explained by Wojo: "basically an archaic form of life insurance...a group of subscribers who are usually from the same family pool their money and buys equal shares, then the years pass by and people start dyin' off, and finally the last remaining survivor collects the entire pot...that's what Dietrich said!" The two were badly informed by lawyer Horace Sharp (Jay Robinson, second of two), who agrees to rethink his original idea to have one commit suicide on the other's behalf. Levitt is anxious to finalize the report that could win him the Medal of Valor, bringing in witnesses Marken (Joseph V. Perry, last of four), Roselle (Lou Cutell, second of two), and Mrs. Edna Sligman (Jane Dulo, second of two), to offer their statements to Captain Miller of how he rescued the boy 10 floors up the month before. A CPR instructor (Dennis Lipscomb) goes berserk during a department store cookware demonstration, but his skills do come in handy at the 12th Precinct (Sam Ingraffia appears as the same ambulance attendant he'd played in "The Radical"). Unfortunately, his success at CPR depends on the steady presence of his female instruction mannikin (Harris: "I'm gonna run Steve and Eydie over to Manhattan South!").
