YOU CAN RUN FROM BARNABY, BUT YA' CAN'T HIDE!
tcchelsey7 December 2023
Good writing and an excellent cast here, put together by veteran film writer Robert Pirosh, who actually began his career in comedy, writing two classic films for the MARX BROTHERS.

He also contributed to the screenplay of the WIZARD OF OZ. In tv he wrote episodes for MANNIX, also IRONSIDE, many others.

The story is not original, but it's a clever coverup that makes it very interesting and the game Barnaby plays. Basically, a man is shot and killed in a struggle, and two other men involved make it all look like a suicide, thus sparing them any embarrassing questions. Barnaby gets into the mix and proceeds to fake out the fakers, who truly deserve the tables turned on them. Wait and see how it all comes tumbling down.

You also know that if Don Porter (as Montgomery) is in the cast, it's going to be fun. Porter graduated from good guy roles for many years, including playing Sally Field's dad in GIDGET, to playing some devious and deadly gentlemen. Famous British actress Jane Merrow (who is still acting today), plays Hillary. Soap opera star Peggy McCay (DAYS OF OUR LIVES) has a good role as Mrs. Tatum. She would appear three times on the series, long a popular actress in all the Warner Brothers/ABC tv shows in the 50s and 60s.

Historically speaking, we also get to see the famous Joseph Bishop Green mansion, based in Flintridge, California, near Glendale and Pasadena. It was built by one of the most famous Los Angeles architechts, Paul R. Williams, who built homes for the stars. It was later used as a backdrop in dozens of tv shows. The problem is no one really took time out to reveal what a legendary house this is, later a base for many LA social events.

Worth staying up late for! SEASON 3 EPISODE 12 remastered CBS dvd box set.

Not a whole lot to make this one stand out.

"Web of Deceit" is a very ordinary episode of "Barnaby Jones"...at best. As I watched it, I found something happening that's unusual for the show.... I found I just didn't care what was happening and never found the mystery that compelling. Perhaps I am having a bad day...but I really think the writing in this one was a bit of a disappointment.

Early in the episode, there is a struggle over a gun and a man is killed. But instead of telling the police the truth, the shooter and a witness conspire together to make it look like a suicide. When Barnaby Jones gets involve, his strategy seems to be to get the pair to betray each other...or think the other has betrayed them.

Nothing all that interesting in this one. The chase scene at the end...ditto. After all, you have two elderly guys (Don Porter and Buddy Ebsen) running through the woods...at half speed of course!
