A "Cannon" copycat...with a cult added to boot!
planktonrules29 July 2021
According to IMDB, the plot for this is very similar to an earlier episode of "Cannon"...and both were written by the same guy. This is believable, since both shows were Quinn Martin productions...and both shows had a lot of similarities.

The "Cannon" episode is pretty similar. There are a couple major changes. In the first episode, it involves a husband estranged from his wife...here in the other episode it is a father estranged from his daughter. But the bigger difference is the cult...now THAT is difference.

Julie is not happy at home and after an argument with her father, she steals jewelry from this rich man's safe and runs away with her boyfriend. However, she overhears him talking to his partner...he is only interested in taking advantage of her and her wealth...and Julie speeds away in her car. On the way, she runs over the partner....but what she doesn't know is that his 'friend' just shot him....and she thinks she killed the guy. Besides, it was an accident. But Julie is dumb and instead of going to the police, she runs and ends up taking refuge with a cult. They seem really nice and loving...but are complete scumbags bent on bleeding her and her father. Why? Because they drugged her and in her stupor, she talked about what she'd done...and they plan on taking full advantage of this! Nice folks, huh?

This is a very good episode. It's not original but it is nice that the changes they made to the story are really neat...especially this evil cult angle. Well worth seeing...even if poor Julie is a bit of a dunce.

WATCH THIS FOR KATHLEEN BELLER
tcchelsey27 February 2024
Excellent role for actress Kathleen Beller, who got her start on SEARCH FOR TOMORROW in the early 70s. Kathleen usually played young women with lots of problems, and she's in a big mess here.

True, this was a reworking of a CANNON episode, one not to miss, tailored for Beller. She plays Julie, the daughter of a wealthy man who hooks up with a con who is just using her for her money.

She catches on and RUNS -- only to get mixed up with a cult. The cult angle is unusual, but quite topical at the time in news headlines.

Series regular Linden Chiles also appears in a good supporting role as her father. Kathleen Beller later co-starred on DYNASTY as Kirby. This episode is based on "Lady on the Run" from CANNON, written by Gerald Sanford.

Note; if you watched this series, especially in the later season episodes, the writers began to crank out more stories about young runaways, also featuring Buddy Ebsen's daughter, Bonnie. This would all tie in with JR. Stay tuned.

Final episode of SEASON 5. Remastered CBS color.
