More evidence that the series had seen better days.

Up through season four, "Barnaby Jones" was a top-notch detective series. However, during subsequent seasons, the show began to show signs that it had seen better days. First, they brought in Jedediah Jones...who could have been a good character but who was generally underwritten and one-dimensional. Second, the show in seasons six onward, the show just got lazy. Instead of the usual string of clients, shows mostly began to be cases involving Betty and Jedediah's personal lives. While there were a few such cases in previous seasons, in season six and seven, MOST cases seemed to somehow involve the two...making it seem that both were 'black widows' as folks started dying or being threatened simply because they were their friends!! And so, when I began watching "Memory of a Nightmare", I almost screamed. Why? Because it was yet another case where Betty is directly involved. It has gotten so bad you wonder why Barnaby even bothers getting clients any more and just concentrates on cleaning up the messes around Betty and Jedediah!

In this case, Betty and a friend are driving home late at night. They are run off the road deliberately. Her male passenger is killed and the driver of the other car is about to kill Betty when folks pass by and scare the killer off. Now, following the accident and Betty's head injury, she has little recollection of that night...and so they try using hypnotherapy to recover her memory.

Fortunately, the hypnotherapy is portrayed realistically in that it's not magical and doesn't offer Betty that much insight. I say fortunately because hypnosis is often shown to be ridiculously and unrealistically in films or on TV...but not here. As far as the rest of the show goes, it's pretty good. In fact my only big complaint is the Betty angle...a well to which the writers simply went to too often...so often that it eventually seemed almost comical.

Not bad

I love Barnaby and I love Betty (I tolerate jr) I don't know why but there can never be enough Barnaby in an episode but sometimes an episode can have too much Betty! If there's a good guest actor sharing the lead with her then sometimes it's a great episode but sometimes too much Betty is a bad thing! I'm.

"Memory of a Nightmare" was a fine showcase for Lee Meriwether in "Barnaby Jones:

With Buddy Ebsen reducing his screen time in the last two seasons of "Barnaby Jones", many of the stories showcased either J. R. or, in this case, Betty as here she drives a close friend home from a party and she's being run off by another car. She undergoes hypnosis to try to remember what happened but not to her satisfaction. I'll stop there and just say this was quite another thrilling ep of the show I started watching on MeTV recently. The guest stars mentioned by the announcer at the beginning I did not recognize but during the end credits, I noticed a Lisa Loring among the names. I'm guessing this is the same one who played Wednesday on "The Adams Family" and had passed several months ago. Anyway, I highly recommend "Memory of a Nightmare".

Another excellent episode.

Barnaby Jones consistently provides entertaining shows season after season.

This has action, suspense and even some hypnosis thrown in.

Betty is great as she always is.

You will be thrilled to see this case unfold and delighted by the conclusion. Excellent.

BETTY'S REALLY BAD ROAD TRIP.

I agree, Lee Meriwether was quite good in her role, and I often compare her to Gail Fisher on MANNIX. To her advantage, producer Quinn Martin saw to it she got much larger roles, and even got to sing in a previous episode, and audiences appreciated that. That was a key element to the success of this series, and long before the addition of JR.

Another interesting story for Betty, quite original and with some very good acting on Lee's part.

Here, Betty undergoes hypnosis due to the fact that she can't remember details of a fatal car accident involving her friend. You have to admit, there's a subtle bit of Hitchcock at work here also. Betty is trapped in her car and sees the killer retrieve a letter off the victim. What's in the letter?

I agree with production notes, the crash of Betty's Ford Pinto was originally used in a previous season episode, obviously to save some money. Additionally, this was one of the few episodes to be written by a new writer, Shirley Leeds. She did an excellent job and should have written more stories.

Two top actors here; Granville Van Dusen (as Joe), best known for the YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS and Claudette Nevins (as Pat), frequently on the show, and one of the best "mystery lady" actresses. She later became a very successful voice actress, particularly for tv commercials.

Again, guessing the culprit is the best part, especially for all us fans from the beginning.

SEASON 7 EPISODE 10 remastered color CBS dvd box set. 2018 release.
