In the epilogue to this episode, Opie's girlfriend, Mary Wiggins, is seen in the barber shop, making her the first in a very short list of females to ever grace the inside of Floyd's. Ellie appears briefly in "Mayberry on Record," Aunt Bee in a couple of episodes (one of which was "The Jinx"), a female reporter in "Crime Free Mayberry" and, of course, curvy and sweet-smelling manicurist Ellen Brown (Barbara Eden) and her replacement, Emma, in "The Manicurist."
Floyd's "Hail to Thee, Miss Mayberry" song is sung to the tune of "O Christmas Tree."
Josie Lloyd, who plays the mayor's daughter, 'Josephine Pike,' appeared as his daughter with a different name, 'Juanita Pike,' just three episodes earlier in "Mayberry Goes Hollywood." In Season 3 and Season 5, she appeared as 'Lydia Crosswaith(e),' with no relation to the Pike family.
Although he's not credited in this episode, Paul Bakanas, who plays the big pilgrim behind Floyd in the pageant rehearsals, appeared later in "Aunt Bee, the Warden" as Junior Gordon.
Frank Ferguson, who in this episode plays Sam Lindsey, is seen numerous times throughout the series, but as different characters. Among them are 'Wilbur Pine,' the man who marries Rose in the first episode, "The New Housekeeper." There, Rose is played by Mary Treen. Treen and Ferguson are depicted as a different married couple, Sam and Clara Lindsey, in "Ellie for Council" and Treen again plays 'Clara Lindsey' in "Those Gossipin' Men." In this episode, Sam's wife is played by a different, uncredited actor, seen briefly in the audience at the contest.
