In the old days of Hollywood, actors would slip in the names of other famous people that they knew and had worked with. This was called "an inside joke." Such was the case on this show when Otis Campbell (
Hal Smith) was acting as a crossing guard and had trouble with an uncooperative school boy explained below. The setup: back in the 1940s Hal (along with
Neil Reagan) was an announcer on Warner Brothers Radio station, KFWB. He worked there for almost ten years, on both the "Jimmie Jackson Show" and "Jimmie Jackson's Memory Lane" show. Both Hal and
Jimmie Jackson remained close friends until Hal's untimely death in 1994. The gag: Hal knew Jimmie watched The Andy Griffith Show (1960) and on this particular episode Otis was assigned to be a school crossing guard and as such ran into problems with the uncooperative boy mentioned above. It seems this boy would not let Otis help him across the street. Of course, this caused a stir and Otis ran ahead to the Sheriff's Office to tell Barney, with tongue in cheek, that "little Jimmie Jackson" was a trouble maker.
