When a drunken Aunt Bee notices Andy's arrival at the meeting, she calls him "Marshal Matt Dillon." Guest star John Dehner auditioned three times for the role of Matt Dillon on the radio version of 'Gunsmoke.'
In this episode, Aunt Bee tells Colonel Harvey their address is 332 Maple Road. In Season 2, Episode 18, "Jailbreak," Barney tells Mr. Horton that Andy's address is 24 Elm Street. In Season 4, Episode 16, "Barney's Sidecar," Opie starts to burn their address on the house, starting with a "3." In "A New Doctor In Town," Andy tells Dr. Thomas Petersen his address is 14 Maple.
This is the first episode in which the closet by the front door appears. It would remain for the rest of the series.
The portrait on which Barney is trying to model his hair is of Rock Hudson. Rock is Aunt Bee's big movie star crush.
Death rarely touches Mayberry, despite opportunities. Here, Aunt Bee is affected by the death of a fellow citizen who was never seen in the series. Among the three most recognized actors playing citizens of Mayberry, Dick Elliott, who portrayed Mayor Pike, died in 1961 (season 2). In season 3, there was a different mayor, Mayor Roy Stoner, portrayed by Parley Baer without any mention of Pike's demise, resignation or an election, emergency or otherwise. It can be argued that part of Mayberry's charm lies in the absence of any likable character's death. Other actors who died during the series: Will Wright (old Ben Weaver, the grumpy merchant), Cheerio Meredith (predominantly seen as elderly Emma Brand, the hypochondriac), Joseph Hamilton (frequently seen as elderly townsman Chester Jones) and Joseph Crehan (unnamed townsman seen in seasons 1 through 3).
