A charming huckster calling himself "Colonel Harvey" has rolled into town hawking a rejuvenating Indian "elixir." Aunt Bee falls under his spell, and it is up to Andy to protect her from his wiles. This episode reminds us to what extent TAGS was rooted in traditional archetypes - archetypes like the traveling snake-oil salesman. John Dehner is dryly amusing as Colonel Harvey, conjuring up a humbug "medicine man" who is a cross between Doctor Dulcamara from the Donizetti opera "The Elixir of Love" and Professor Marvel from "The Wizard of Oz." And it's amusing to see the usually straight-laced Frances Bavier let loose as the slightly inebriated Aunt Bee. Bavier is quite flamboyant in this sequence, and we get a glimpse of what her stage acting must have been like. This episode is so full of quaint old-fashioned charm that we feel well compensated for the plot, which is on the thin and predictable side. John Dehner turns in a florid and impressive performance as Col. Harvey.
